A man has been sentenced to 12 months, but will only spend two months in prison, for having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl who was reportedly his girlfriend.

The 21 year old man pleaded guilty on Monday which was a factor in the reduction of his sentence passed by Justice Iain Morley.

The gray farm resident had already spent 6 months in jail and therefore has only two months remaining in his sentence.

According to reports, on the evening of May 22 2019 the man invited the girl to his bedroom and he began to touch the child intimately.

The girl then laid back on the bed and the convict joined her and began to unbutton her pants. She rebuttoned them but he unbuttoned them again, before removing her pants and underwear and proceeding to have sex with her.

When the victim arrived home, she was asked about her whereabouts and confessed what had happened.

A report was made to Gray’s Farm Police Station and the minor was examined.

The man was subsequently charged with the offence which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The convict claimed he didn’t know that the girl was 13 years old, nor that she was still in school.

  1. Antigua, it really is time to come out of the dark ages with regards to sex with a child under the age of consent. Especially where the other party (male OR female) is over the age of 21 and considered an adult.

This is not unlawful sexual intercourse – it is RAPE!

In most first world countries, children under the age of 13 are not considered able or competent to give consent to sexual activity, and penetrative sex is classed as rape. It’s time to move away from the third world thinking some people seem to have on this in Antigua, and start protecting the younger generation.

Pleading guilty to such a heinous crime should not be a deterent from stricter sentencing, or a ‘life-line for the perpetrator’ and the guidelines should be changed with regards to protecting minors involved in sexual crimes. This physical and mental abuse is life changing for the victim. Those who plead guilty should be registered so that anyone can make a check with the authorities in the future, to know what their crimes have been.

It’s incredible that we are so backward with regards to crimes that we consider (or the judicial system considers), to be serious in this country!

This leniency, will only lead people to take the law into their own hands and quite frankly who can blame them!
