A man who was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition which he said was merely to protect his family has been sent to prison for a year and eight months.
That was the sentence passed by Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel earlier today in the All Saints Magistrate’s court in relation to Adil Colbourne.
Late last week, the accused admitted to possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of 28 rounds of ammunition, possession of Cannabis plants, and Cultivation of said plants.
The man had told the court that he was robbed a few years ago and obtained a gun to protect his family as a result.
He was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison and until today for sentencing.
In today’s hearing the Magistrate went through the sentencing guidelines outlining aggravating and mitigating factors.
In the end, she arrived at an eight-month sentence for the gun and one year for the bullets.
The sentences were made to run consecutively.
