Leonce Gouveia, 50, yesterday pleaded guilty to unlawfully discharging a firearm in a public place, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of 85 rounds of .38 ammunition, plus assault and battery.

According to a source, the incident took place on April 18 when the Crosbies man had an altercation with his nephew.

Gouveia reportedly hit his nephew with the gun and fired it away from him during an argument.

The St John’s Magistrates’ Court ordered him to pay a fine of $2,500 for possession of the firearm, $1,000 for possession of ammunition, $500 for discharging the firearm in a public place, and $100 for battery.

There was no sentence for the assault instead he was reprimanded and discharged on the assault charge.

The fine is expected to be paid within three weeks, if not Gouveia will serve six months in prison.

  1. And people pay more for stepping out during the curfew. Anyway them say the CROSBIES man.
When them have power and authority they nuh give a dam bout nobody
    Love that song

  2. So let me get this straight, one man is fined $4000 for ‘ unlawfully discharging a firearm in a public place, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of 85 rounds of .38 ammunition, plus assault and battery,’ while another is fined $5000 for breaking curfew while riding a bike to see his girlfriend.

  3. Should have made an example of his ass. Thinking he is a “badman” just cause he has a gun. He thinks he can brandish it and bully people. Hmmmmmm. A real coward.

    • Yes, he is a total coward. They should have “made an example of his ass.” He foolie or something?

  4. So a serious crime with a gun involving an assault only gets a 4000 fine but people breaking curfew get a $5000 fine or 6 months in prison?

I’m sure the fact that this guy is probably not black and lives in Crosbies has nothing to do with it. Shaking my head.

  5. Our laws need to be revised….. The penalties for fire arm offenders should be alot more severe…. A man’s life is sacred and a gun should not be used by anyone to create intimidation or otherwise, whether he has a fire arm license or not…..

  6. HHHHHMMMMMM $4000.00 Crosbies man discharging a firearm in a public place, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of 85 rounds of .38 ammunition, plus assault and battery. $5000caught riding a bicycle at about 7:30 pm on his way to his girlfriend’s home. Seen.

  7. We need more explanation of this story! Was he at some point a permit holder, and the permit expired? is that why the sentence is so lenient? These sentences do not seem consistent in any way, shape or form! It’s no wonder people always shout one level of sentence for the rich man, and another for the poor. As a citizen, do I have the right to ask the court to look into this sentence again for it being too lenient???

  8. Why are Antiguans this stupid? This has absolutely nothing to do with politics or someone’s address. WHAT?

The exorbitant fines were put in place to keep people at home during the enforced quarantine period.

If the fines aren’t enforced, then more persons would break it because they know they’ll get a slap on the wrist.

Why would you even compare both? What’s wrong with you people? The world sees your dumb views on life and it’s embarrassing to say the least.

Stop being idiots and think before you speak.

    • I can’t believe your comment was posted. It is completely insulting, inaccurate, insensitive, and moronic. A fine of 500 EC or 200 EC would be equally a deterrent to a poor person to stay indoors. Requiring a fine of 5000 EC of 6 months in prison means that a lot of poor people are going to be in prison for breaking curfew.

Under any circumstances, assaulting another person with a firearm is a more serious offense and should be punished as such.

And by the way, I’m not an Antiguan either. But I can clearly see that the justice system here is unfair to poor people.

    • There is no way to respond to not a stupid Antiguan but the topic is not you, a man with a gun, and a man with a bicycle. “Why would you even compare both?” I would like you to sit down and think of it. hhmmmmm. I hope it sees it. “Stop being idiots and think before you speak.” Y

  9. Only time police go Crosbies is for them !! Back in my weed smoking days me and a partner of mine pull over in a quiet spot to bun a joint. Next thing my car lock off and 2 guys walk up to me and ask me who the fk are you and where I buy the weed. One of them had a gun and said if I can’t tell him my licence plate he go shot me. My partner ask him if the gun was real and he point the gun right at his head and fired twice, powder went in his eye and blind him so he cover his face, then the guy walk over to me and say God just spare my friend and if I brave like him. The other guy with him just stand up and laugh. When we got into town we went straight to the station and they tell me there has been alot of break ins there and what I want him to do. Just leave it he said.

  10. So based on what I’m reading here, he had a few fines, but the one that stood out to me was the simple $500.00 for firing a firearm in public!!!??! Now stay with me here… Some time ago, 4 women were Found guilty of stabbing another woman. They were fined $600. Each … now shooting a gun is only 500.00 but Antigua seems like the place to go to commit a crime because if someone trouble me I can shoot a gun or stab them and only get fined a few hundreds …. but it won’t be the place to break curfew …. because that’s $5000. OK sounds about right!
