Man Detained as Authorities Target Illegal Dispensaries in Health Crackdown
A man has been detained following a weekend operation targeting illegal medical dispensaries, as authorities step up efforts to combat the unlicensed sale of prescription drugs across the country.

The crackdown forms part of a wider government initiative aimed at curbing unauthorised medical practices, particularly the distribution of drugs such as Ozempic — a prescription medication intended for diabetes treatment but increasingly sought after for weight loss.
Health officials warn that the off-label use of Ozempic is being exploited by unlicensed individuals operating without proper medical oversight, raising serious concerns about patient safety.
The operation was led by the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Alfred Athill, with backing from the Ministry of Health. Undercover officers raided one such operation over the weekend, seizing several items including pre-filled syringes allegedly intended for unauthorised treatments.
One individual was taken into custody for questioning but has since been released. No charges have yet been laid, and investigations remain ongoing.
Officials say the move signals the government’s determination to enforce health regulations and protect the public from potentially harmful, unregulated care.
“The public is strongly advised to seek treatment only from licensed medical professionals,” the Ministry of Health said in a statement.
Further operations are expected in the coming weeks as the campaign against illegal medical practices continues.

Me just hope this nah target the small man while the big ones get a pass.
If you selling without license, then prepare for consequences.
Me wonder if them really focusing on health or just flexing authority.
You want run a dispensary? Do it right, get certified.
Me tired of pop-up shops with no standards. Good move.
Oh my!
Certain drugs should be illegal in all areas! What’s this nonesense that “make you lose weight” chupzzz. If you wanna lose weight prioritize time to walk and change you’re diet
not everyone wants to/can walk. “work smart, not hard”
Ozempic. A drug for the rich. We see people go on these things that apparently suppose to help them lose weight and some of them are still big. I guess the person was just trying to gain a little money! Afterall Ozempic is a expensive pill
Ozempic in Antigua is like house rent. You can’t afford it. For those who can I guess this is proof that you should always get it from a medical practitioner. Be careful.
now that is one area of government policy I will agree with. I mean with all this obesity health problems, plastic surgery over weight etc women are facing in order to look good they are going to be exploited
So, how is it possible for them to dispense without having a importation license, which is vigorously vetted at the port of entry. I mean, you can’t even import authoriser prescription drugs without going through a vigorous checkout; when legally picking it up at the entry point. This is like putting the cart before the horse: with this knee-jerk reactionary posturing. Do it right or, don’t do it at all. If it can’t get in, then it’s fair to say it can’t get out.
It might be interesting to know the truth behind Antigua’ pharmacies. Is it true that most of the local pharmacies are operated by non-nationals, mainly but not exclusively, Guyanese?
How can this escape oversight of the Ministry of Health and the government as a whole????
See why we need a genuine, serious, patriotic ,
competent, effective Alternative political party in Antigua and Barbuda??? I am in no way referring to the present bunch of nincompoops that parade under the banner of the UPP! These clowns are good only at creating childish stories enough to keep their party base ignorant, distracted, and dumb NF.(Not Friendly).
What is your excuse/explanation, Sir Molwyn Joseph????
Fret not! The HON. LARS JAMALE PRINGLE will fix this when he becomes Prime Minister. He is a born and bred Grassroots Antiguan and is 100% loyal to his country (no foreign woman can take that loyalty away). He feels and understands the plight of his people having himself experienced challenges growing up in a working class family.
Make your “X”count and give the job of managing the country to the HON. LARS JAMALE PRINGLE. First elected in 2018, so in 2028 elections (10 years later) his time will come to lead the nation forward.
