Major Dams Under Construction to Address Water Scarcity for Farmers
St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda – The government of Antigua and Barbuda has initiated the construction of major dams in strategic locations across the country in a bid to tackle water scarcity and strengthen agricultural resilience.
The project, announced by Minister of Agriculture Hon. Anthony Smith during a recent press conference on food security, is aimed at providing a sustainable water supply for farmers, particularly during the dry season.
Water availability remains one of the biggest challenges facing Antigua and Barbuda’s agricultural sector. Farmers often struggle to irrigate their crops during prolonged droughts, leading to reduced yields and increased dependence on imported food.
To combat this, the Ministry of Agriculture is prioritizing the development of reliable water infrastructure, which includes the construction of multiple large-scale dams to store and distribute water efficiently.
“The construction of these dams is a critical step in ensuring that our farmers have access to a stable water supply year-round,” Minister Smith stated. “By securing water resources, we can improve agricultural productivity, reduce losses during dry spells, and ultimately strengthen our nation’s food security.”
