M 3.5 Earthquake Recorded East-Southeast of Antigua, UWI Reports

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake was recorded late Tuesday night in the eastern Caribbean, according to preliminary data from the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC).

The tremor occurred at 8:53 p.m. local time on December 23 (12:53 a.m. UTC on December 24). The epicentre was located at latitude 16.55°N and longitude 59.49°W, at a depth of 27 kilometres.

UWI-SRC reported that the quake was located approximately 230 kilometres east of Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, 252 kilometres northeast of Roseau, Dominica, and 269 kilometres east-southeast of St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported. The Seismic Research Centre noted that the location and magnitude are preliminary and may be updated as additional data are analysed. Residents who felt the tremor are encouraged to submit reports through the UWI-SRC earthquake feedback system.
