Former Finance Minister Harold Lovell has accepted Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s challenge to a public debate on the decision to transfer the Jolly Beach Resort to the Social Security Board, and he is calling for an independent committee to manage the process.

This is a rare but welcome moment in local politics, Lovell says, and should not be just a political face-off.   Rather, it must be a moment of truth for the Nation’s pensioners, workers, and taxpayers.

Therefore, he is ready to have the conversation the public deserves: one grounded in facts, free from fear-mongering, and focused on accountability.

While Prime Minister Browne touts the Social Security-Jolly Beach deal as a bold and lawful investment strategy, Lovell asks whether the Nation, once again, is being sold a dream at the expense of the people.

“We’ve heard this tune before,” Lovell says, referring to Browne’s past promises that failed to materialize.

His hope for this debate is that Browne will not lean on political spin, but come to the table with transparency, data, and audited financial records.

“What is at stake is not just a hotel,” Lovell says; “it is the future of Antigua and Barbuda’s Social Security system, a lifeline for retirees and for working people.”

Accordingly, he says, the people deserve to know:

• Is the Jolly Beach truly a performing asset?

• Will this move secure or further endanger Social Security pensions?

• Who, ultimately, benefits from this deal?

In the meanwhile, Lovell, along with former Social Security Chairman Everett Christian and MP Sherfield Bowen, will speak on this matter during a townhall meeting on Tuesday, June 24, at 7 p.m., at Freedom Hall.  The public is invited and the meeting will be live-streamed.

  1. I look forward to tune into this debate on ABS or wherever it’s hosted where all ideas can contend. Social Security is too important to all of us for any political games to be played with it.

  2. Great!!!!
You only objective in that debate should be to show/expose the incompetence of Gaston Browne.
I encouraged you to take on the challenge.
I have one condition to go along with the acceptance.
The debate must be conducted by a journalist.
    Not by an ass kisser.
    Therefore that excludes Burford.
Even further I recommend journalist just as is done during cabinet press briefing to pose questions.
It must not take place on the terms of ABS and Burford.
    Neutral interviewer!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. So, now iz time for an adult conversation on social security, the UPP just side step Pringle??
What does that say about Pringle’s current capacity and readiness to lead the country if he isn’t even competent enough to be at the forefront articulating the UPP’s position on the state of social security?

UPP have a leadership problem because action speaks louder than words. So we all now see ah Lovell who the REAL leader of UPP be. Is like Mr. Knight really right about Pringle the way he does.

  4. These are the kinds of deliberation and action that are beneficial and useful and I hope it can take place in a cordial and sociable setting without name-calling, vilification and slander. The nation and its citizens would be better off with this exchange.

  5. @ Straight Shooter, I agree with you, as long as it’s not Burford. This gentleman came here on a year contract to improve ABS and he still here after so many years. I have said it a thousand times…” Beware of foreign consultants coming under the false pretense of offering technical assistance when in fact they are seeking permanent employment and citizenship ” Look at Customs

  6. Beautiful just beautiful!

I can’t wait to witness this challenge by the Most Honourable Harold Lovell. If he keeps his cool and tackles Browne’s broken manifesto promises over his 11 years, and then his obvious weaknesses on our finances/economy then surely it’s a win win debate for Mr Lovell, paving the way for a return to the UPP fold.

And if he does a ‘rope-a-dope’ on Gaston Browne’s fragile and temperamental behaviour, winning this debate will most certainly be a walk in the park.

The only downside I can see to this debate though, is why oh why is the government’s state media mouthp ABS involved? Outrageous!!!

This is like having a biased and myopic referee in charge of proceedings …

  7. Bring in Nikki phoenix – a real journalist – to show Burford how to hold politicians to account. Look how she retire Lionel Hurst …

  8. This is a STAGED comeback attempt by Limpy Joe IMF Pimp to try and undermine the DULY ELECTED LEADER JAMALE PRINGLE

  9. There shouldn’t be any debate about using social security to precure investment loans for failed ventures like jolly beach, none.

The case Gatson is making is a foolish and risky one, plain and simple, argument done!

This is just a two bit swindler trying to sell people on a bill of goods that he knows would not materialize.

If Jolly Beach was such a locative venture, why didn’t he use the stolen loot he got from the Alpha and invest in Jolly Beach?

At least that money was free..but he spent that loot so fast you don’t even know what became of it.

Stop been swindled by this man people, stop falling for the snake oil tricks from this man.

We all know you don’t get this rich in Antigua unless you’re a crook.

  10. This looks like a fine opportunity for the UPP to save some face. Mr Pringle cannot debate Mr Browne. Browne would roll all over Pringle (who said he admired him), not necessarily with facts but with scorn, insults, bombast and derision.

It appears that Mr Browne might be surprised that Mr Lovell has accepted the challenge. Since Mr Lovell spoke out on the social security issue, he and his radio station have been slinging mud at him nonstop. This smells like fear.

We all know the facts about what has happened to Social Security money on the arrival of this Administration in 2014 and how Browne has bastardized this statutory body from the onset of his reign.

Mr Lovell is a very intelligent and astute man. He knows Browne well and his attitude of trying to overpower anyone who is not in agreement with him, or is not fawning all over him to make him look favourable. Lovell must therefore insist on the following things.

Neither of them must have any affiliate on the debate stage. Neither political nor abettor. It would be wise to look at the format of the US debates and copy the fine points from them. For that reason, it is important that a moderator be selected who meets the approval of both debaters.

BTW, stay away from the big brains with the copious letters behind their names.

UPP, this gives the party an opportunity to sort out its poor public image and its leadership quagmire. This has nothing to do with Mr Pringle as a person. All his supporters who keep saying that he should be given a chance to learn the job of leader, take note. It might have missed you that this is 2025 and by the time a person reaches those lofty heights, most of the learning has been done and it is time for implementation. Maybe Mr Pringle is wobbling under this very heavy weight of expectations and would welcome the opportunity to relinquish it with some grace and relief.

  11. Looking forward to this debate, just keep it respectful and please, please we do not want the mercenary BURFORD involved. Do you agree with me Faithful National # 1
