Look out for pedestrians, bikers and motorcyclists to avoid accidents, Traffic Head implores drivers

REAL NEWS – Police Superintendent Elson Quammie, head of the Traffic Department, is advising motorists to exercise certain road courtesies, such as looking out for pedestrians, in order to avoid traffic collisions.

Paying attention on the roads to avoid hitting both pedal and motorcyclists is also of utmost importance, Quammie says.

This warning is particularly pertinent since, earlier this week, a motorcycle police officer, Robert Dyer, Jr., was buried, having lost his life in such a collision.

To help prevent accidents, Quammie advises motorists to practice defensive driving – that is, driving not only for themselves, but doing so for others, as well, and trying to anticipate what the other driver is going to do.

Discretion is another important aspect of driving, he points out. Meanwhile, Quammie says that incidents of road rage have declined since the direction around the newly built roundabouts was changed, and fewer collisions have been occurring in their vicinity.

  1. So too, pedestrians, bikers and motorcyclists need to be aware of vehicular traffic as well. I have often times seen pedestrians wearing all black at night with nothing reflective; motorcyclist also believe that they can zigzag their way through traffic. When these groups of people are in the wrong (pedestrians, bikers and motorcyclists) who takes the fault?

  2. One does not simply anticipate stupidity…while I agree that drivers need to be courteous to other road users these road uses need to remember that they have to use sense when on the road. Walking side by side, dashing across the street and stepping off sidewalks while looking at their phones will get them run over…and you better believe I ain’t taking blame for their stupidity.
We have road rules for drivers. We should have them for other road users. Police should be able to ticket pedestrians for crossing the roads in unsafe ways or walking in the roads when sidewalks are available…though we do be needing sidewalks….or walking side by side with 3 to 4 people….why must you do that? Are you and your homies so much in love you want to be by their side so your hands can brush against each other and you can giggle and make eye contact? Remember to say no homo when you link pinkie fingers.
Again…we need road rules for pedestrians.
