The Head of the Laboratory Department at the Mount St. John Medical Centre (MSJMC), Dr. Lester Simon, says the facility will be able to conduct tests on roughly 100 samples weekly, since local testing is expected to intensify shortly.
At present, tests are, indeed, being done locally, but samples are still being sent to CARPHA in Trinidad for confirmation testing.
In the past several weeks, the tests were coming back negative, and because of this he did not want to engage in testing without a second verification from an independent body, Dr. Simon explains.
He says, however, that now that 39 positive tests have returned, there is a panel of tests with which to make comparisons and guide local procedures.
Simon says once samples have been taken, the results will be available within 24 to 48 hours. However, he adds that staffing will have to be ramped up to facilitate this.
