The country’s garment factory is now making face masks to protect residents from contracting the new coronavirus.
“We did our research first as to select the best type of material. We looked even at the size of the droplets of the COVID-19 as to make sure we are selecting the best fabric, one that’s breathable and offers a level of comfort because people would be wearing them for hours”, explained Lance Bromfield, the Manager of the National Garment Manufacturing Initiative.
Bromfield told state media the masks will be similar to those bought externally and once completed will be handed over to the Health Ministry for distribution.
“Our research shows that it’s best to use the 100% cotton as for one, it’s breathable and it filters a lot of or it’s able to filter a lot of viruses. It’s the same size, it also carries the wire on top just as the N95 that would shape over the nose as to allow for it to fit comfortably”, he explained.
Health Minister Molwyn Joseph said masks will be provided for every citizen amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said they will be first distributed to taxi drivers and bus operators then residents will receive theirs.
“I’m working with the Minister of Trade and we are hoping within two weeks we will be able to produce enough masks in Antigua and Barbuda that every citizen will have masks to wear”, the Health Minister said recently.

This a great initiative by the govt….. Like Cuba, we are now showing to the world that in troubling times, when resources become scarce, we have a govt who has now thought out of the box to be creative & responsible and now become self reliant to survive within such adversity
This is GREAT! But in the meantime, is there anywhere that still has masks in stock? Everywhere I have been, they are sold out. A lot of potential exposure can occur in the 2 week turnaround time for local production.
Improvise , use a scarf , towel anything to cover your nose and mouth . Do not touch mouth , nose, eyes or ears without washing your hands first once outdoors.
