Living Legends: Gift Baskets, Gratitude & Centenarian Joy: Celebrating Antigua and Barbuda’s Oldest Citizens During Centenarian Week 2025
As Centenarian Week 2025 continues under the theme “Honouring Our Elders, Preserving Our Heritage,” the Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division under the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation has been actively celebrating the lives and contributions of Antigua and Barbuda’s treasured centenarians.
On Tuesday, June 10, the Division kicked off its Visitation and Gift Basket Distribution initiative. This heartfelt tradition honours the resilience and wisdom of those who have reached the remarkable milestone of 100 years and beyond. Gift baskets filled with essentials and thoughtful items were hand-delivered to several centenarians across the island, bringing smiles, gratitude, and joy to homes and families.
The initiative continued on Wednesday, June 11, with special visits to the three oldest living centenarians in the country:
- Mrs. Hermena Goodwin, 104 years old, of Jonas Road, All Saints – the oldest living person in Antigua and Barbuda
- Ms. Victoria Joseph, 103 years old, of Pares Village
- Mr. Christopher Neville Browne, 102 years old, of Freemans Village
These visits were conducted by His Excellency Sir Clare Roberts, Governor General’s Deputy, alongside Ms. Dale O’Brien, Director of the Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division, staff of the Division, Speaker of the House Mr. Osbert Frederick, and Ms. Jermaine Lewis. The delegation gathered to honour these living legends, sharing prayers, warm conversation, and presenting tokens of appreciation through beautifully curated gift baskets. The presence of family members and well-wishers created a touching and dignified atmosphere that celebrated each centenarian’s unique journey and legacy.
Let us all take a moment to appreciate those who paved the way — pillars of strength, carriers of culture, and the heartbeat of our communities.

Congratulations to these people, please don’t just make their celebration be a political monetization scheme, instead have documentaries asking them question about Antigua and the world in their lifetime for people to hear on television creating a transfer of knowledge, not officials using the occasion to showcase themselves leaving the real gem in oblivion I their photo ops agenda. Remember all the history we know is narrated from our colonial plunderers so these older folks can tell us the correct stories, remember papa Sammy?
