Pollster Says Pringle May Face Pressure to Resign After By-Election Defeat

Regional pollster Peter Wickham says United Progressive Party (UPP) leader Jamale Pringle may come under pressure to offer his resignation following the party’s defeat in the St. Philip North by-election.

Analyzing the results, Wickham described the outcome as a significant setback for the opposition, stating that the UPP is “on the back foot” and at one of its weakest points in recent years.

He suggested that, in keeping with Westminster political traditions, Pringle may be expected to consider stepping aside. “In our Westminster system, invariably when a party leader leads a party into a defeat such as this, I think the honourable thing to do is to offer your resignation,” Wickham said, while noting that it would ultimately be up to Pringle and the party.

Wickham added that such a move could open the door for internal decisions on leadership and potentially create broader political implications. He argued that a leadership vacancy within the UPP could present what he described as a “unique political opportunity” for the governing Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).

He said the scale of Randy Baltimore’s victory — which saw the ABLP secure one of its strongest performances in the constituency — has intensified questions about the opposition’s direction, making the by-election “as much about Jamale Pringle as it was about Randy Baltimore.”

  1. PRINGLE should resign and a new Person should lead UPP. The whole UPP Executive should RESIGN.Nobody wants to see Them. UPP done / totally DEMOLISHED.

  2. Someone ask Mr. Wickam for me how many seats he predicted that the DLP would win against the BLP ?
Also incase he is still listening ask him if he predicted that Mr. Ralph Gonzales would be the only member of his party to retain his seat in the resent St. Vincent General Election?

  3. The CHAIRMAN already said that she and Pringle nar move! So all who want that CONSTITUTIONALLY DUE CONVENTION IN APRIL need to.wet dem hand and wait for she.

  4. The people will never vote in favor of Harold being PM. As ZEENA said above, they need new blood and the new blood will need years before they can be trusted to lead the country.

The time sadly is still not right for UPP.

  5. UPP needs a new leader that is not presently in the party as the present party MPs and Lovell are not it. Somebody fresh with charisma similar to what happened in Grenada with Dickon Mitchell.

  6. GASTON BROWNE calling an early general election would be political suicide, unless G.B address paying the CLICO/BAICO policyholders in ANTIGUA their money, also unpaid obligations to teachers, contractors, vendors, landlords, and LIAT (1974) LTD workers their severance. MOTTLEY paid over 30000 CLICO POLICYHOLDERS also the LIAT WORKERS in BARBADOS and WON the GENERAL ELECTIONS LANDSLIDE VICTORY by telling the people “GIMME THE VOTE AND WATCH MUH”.HOME DRUMS BEAT FIRST, I WILL PAY YOU your money if ELECTED . Promise made promise kept. NOTE: ALMOST EVERY HOUSEHOLD IN ANTIGUA ARE VICTIMS OF THE CLICO/BAICO DEBACLE.

  7. As UPP ditters, the Country goes down the drain.

It would be of interest in knowing what was on voters mind when they voted they voted they did.

  8. Why Wickham doesn’t go and let his husband bull him and keep out our business, not that I expect to see it on ANR but just want them to know how I feel about him meddling in our elections

  9. Your mentality is exactly why the UPP continues to LOSE. Blame, cuss, deflect etc etc instead of sincere INTROSPECTION!

  10. @ Loisers
For your information I do not care about UPP or any other Party in Antigua and I even care less about You and Wickham. Sungu no Bettany Lungu

  11. @loser perfectly said. That is the UPP and their supporters mind set. Blame, cuss, make excuses, deflect. How in the world you go from coming so close to upseat Robin Yearwood who was there long before me born (80’s) baby to getting a 2 to 1 beating. As Bertron Joseph said the strength of a party is a reflection of its leadership. Say what you want about Gaston Browne. He may be a lot of this but he is very strategic politically. Something UPP lacks and they refuse to acknowledge. After the 2004 election ALP was in shambles. Riddle with division just like the present UPP. It took a change of leadership and a total rebrand of the party to what is now ABLP that got them back into power. The UPP on the other hand is self destructive in real time and still there silly delusional supporters are pointing the fingers at everyone and everything except them selves.

  12. The country is finished! St. Phillip north is literally a dump, and these retards voted for more of the same. Bird people are the dumbest people in the WI.

  13. @Mr Byam one needs to revisit the adult LITERACY RATE of ANTIGUA and BARBUDA .It definitely cannot be 99%.as published.
