Prime Minister Gaston Browne said he is allowing the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) time to prepare ahead of general elections, stating that a more organised opponent would ultimately strengthen the political process.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne programme, Browne indicated that his administration is moving toward elections but is not rushing the timeline, noting that the opposition is being given space to get itself ready.
“We’re giving UPP a little information so they can start to prepare themselves,” Browne said.
He added that he wants the party to be properly organised ahead of the contest.
“I want you all to organise yourselves,” he said, before noting, “I’m giving them a little time.”
The Prime Minister suggested that a more structured opposition would benefit governance overall, arguing that stronger political competition helps keep his administration focused.
“That will help to keep us on our toes too,” Browne said.
At the same time, he criticised the current state of the UPP, describing the party as unstable and divided, with internal conflicts undermining its effectiveness.
Browne’s remarks came as he confirmed that general elections are expected within a 90-day window, with the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party advancing its own preparations, including finalising candidates and internal leadership positions.
The comments highlight a dual approach by the Prime Minister — pressing forward with election readiness while signalling that the opposition still has a window to regroup before voters return to the polls.
