Special Parliamentary Sitting Set to Honour Sir Robin Yearwood’s 50 Years of Service

A special sitting of Parliament will be held on February 18 to honour Sir Robin Yearwood for 50 years of uninterrupted parliamentary service, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced Saturday.

Speaking on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne programme, Browne said the sitting will form part of national observances coordinated by a Cabinet-appointed select committee to mark the historic milestone.

“It is astonishing,” Browne said. “To live that long into your 80s and to serve unbroken for 50 years is clearly a record, not only here in Antigua and Barbuda, but within the Caribbean region and possibly throughout the Commonwealth.”

Browne said Cabinet has established a select committee to oversee commemorative activities recognising Yearwood’s five decades of uninterrupted representation of St. Philip’s North. The committee includes Browne, Attorney General Sir Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin and Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph.

“I don’t know that anyone will be able to achieve that feat anytime in the near future,” Browne said, noting that such longevity in public office requires both personal endurance and sustained public trust.

Yearwood has served in several senior ministerial roles, including agriculture, public works and finance, and remains in good health as he approaches the milestone. Browne said the government is also consulting with Yearwood’s family as part of planning for the national recognition.

“We will make sure that we have at least one or two family members involved to help determine the best ways to celebrate his legacy,” he said.

In addition to the parliamentary sitting, Browne said there will be multiple national and constituency-level activities, along with separate commemorations by the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.

“Most importantly, the people must have the confidence in you to allow you to serve for 50 years unbroken,” Browne said. “Sir Robin is special in that regard.”

  1. If anyone was to tell a lie on me about receiving a brown paper bag from boleo, defaming my character….I WOULD NOT ATTEND THAT SPECIAL SITTING….DAT BUN ME

  2. Gaston should also ask pussy salad to tell us what role he played in the IHI rip off along with the APUA kickback from the contractor involving himself, Lester, Asot and the double Sir. This was all heard on the carib arena secret recordings.

As he enters the twilight of his year, perhaps confession would be good for the soul.

  3. Cool Ruler..
Talking about over $160 million in kick back much bigger than vehicle gate scandal….” I saw him with the brown paper bag from APUA”

  4. It’s about time he comes clean and give us the details of the deals with the Hadeeds on the Government Complex and the Wadadl Power Plant and also Robert Construction.

  5. Robin sacrifice the lands and resources of st Phillips north and enrich himself and his ethnicity.

  6. What does cabinet have to do with Robin Yearwood achieving and celebrating 47 unbroken years of parliamentary victory?
Cabinet is the executive arm of government.
It is not an arm of the labour party.
If labour party wants to celebrate Robin’s achievement let them do it as a labour party event. The cabinet, though it is a labour party government, is not an organizing agency to celebrate labour party’s achievement.
This is not a national event.
Now I heard Gaston say the Robin is in very good health.
    Should we believe him?
What was Lester Bird’s health status when Gaston asked Joey John to hide him?
I am sure that pretty soon after Robin is no longer needed we will hear the same Gaston Browne on Robin’s poor health condition.
As for Robin, he has represented tge same constituency for 47 years.
Note I vary from the labour party.
Yhats because Robin has not been a representative for the past three years.
He has spent a total of about two hours in parliament over the last three years.
He has not uttered a single word.
He has not been seen anywhere in his constituency except on the main road being driven to and from doctor and six times going to and from parliament..
Like Shanty said in his calypso, “something sweet in dey”.
Tell me why a man who is supposedly Antigua’s richest native born has to subject himself to such humiliation to the point that he doesn’t know any of his constituents anymore.
Will he be buried with his wealth and especially his dollars?
How many more will die on yhe job like Jerry?
All for more money that they do not need.
What can we be proud of as Robin’s legacy?
What do we have to show for his unbroken years of representation except corruption?
Robin Yearwood will go down in history as the worst constituency representative in the commonwealth.
For those who disagree with me let then take a tour of the constituency for which he has been the representative for 50 unbroken years.
If Christopher Columbus returns tomorrow Robin Yearwood’s constituency is the only one he will remember..
It is even more run down than when Christopher Columbus landed in Antigua centuries ago.
Yet the cabinet is planning on using our tax dollars to celebrate Robin’s failure.
    Shame!!!
    Shame!!!
    Shame!!!!

  7. I knew Robin Yearwood when he worked with a Hotel at Long Bay.Back then,I worked with a Bank in Antigua. That was before he entered politics.Gaston Browne is saying,he made sacrifices.Just wished all ANtiguans made sacrifices like he did.Perhaps they would be financially rich as he is through politics. How did he accumulate so much wealth from a Politician’s salary? He is there for 50 years.Back in those days Politicians salaries were as low as it gets.Do you voters remembered. How much he had to pay his wife in their divorce. She knew how much he was worth then.It is time for him to retire.Go now, enjoy what is left of his time on earth.Perhaps Columbus would not sail by and say. That place is looking the same today, as it did in 1493.

  8. There is a reason he is known as Robin the Hood.

Those in the know know that Gaston and him share something in common. Antigua Newsroom will not post this comment if I state what it is.
