Browne says 2023 election margins influenced by COVID-19, inflation and LIAT collapse
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the outcome of the 2023 general election was shaped in large part by extraordinary global and economic pressures, including the COVID-19 pandemic, rising inflation and the collapse of regional airline LIAT.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM, Browne argued that narrow electoral margins reflected the difficult international environment at the time rather than a rejection of his administration’s policies .
The prime minister pointed to the severe economic disruptions caused by the pandemic, supply chain shocks that fueled inflation, and the fallout from LIAT’s financial collapse as factors that created widespread uncertainty across the region.
He maintained that despite those challenges, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party retained government, describing the result as evidence of continued public support under difficult circumstances.
Browne said conditions have since stabilized and expressed confidence that voters will assess his administration’s record against the backdrop of recovery and ongoing economic activity.
The remarks came as the governing party prepares for the upcoming St. Philip’s North by-election, with both major parties intensifying campaign messaging.

This is another rallying call to all the constituents of St Phillip’s North. You have one of the greatest opportunities to deliver a resounding defeat not only to the ABLP, but to Prime Minister Browne as well, to stifle his march to an autocratic state in Antigua, that we can do without.
March the 13th is your opportunity to show your patriotism and loyalty to the country and halt the 50 years of stagnation in SNP – you it makes sense!
WE NEED YOU MORE THAN EVER SNP VOTERS!
*SPN* and you *know* it makes sense!
I have got to create a narrative or story straight up to spin the present situation where I cause d ANTIGUA and Barbuda to lose Visa free travel to canada and now can’t get visa to go america.
So me go talk about COVID and other things to make them believe we pass the worse .
Me no want them know them can’t fly out for emergency medical care to save their life in the USA.
Me talk little too much, me done a fool the st Phillips north constituency putting on the water while I have to shut it off at other villages, and they say the water slightly salt.
We fooling the beach vendors at long bay until we win then DCA give them notice to move.
Yeah Gaston: you are worst off today and a burden to Antiguans and barbudans because beside your enrichment of family and minister you stop us from getting visa to the united states’.
That means a complete change of government is required to get back to our visa status with the USA and Canada.
