Light Earthquake Recorded Near Antigua and Barbuda

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred near Antigua and Barbuda in the early hours of Friday, March 7, 2025, according to data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The tremor struck at 03:18 UTC at a depth of 17 kilometers.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located at 17.0085°N and 61.094°W, approximately 65 km east of Freetown, Antigua and Barbuda, and about 67 km from Guadeloupe. Despite its occurrence, there have been no reports of the quake being felt in surrounding areas, including Freetown, St. John’s, and All Saints in Antigua and Barbuda, as well as various locations in Guadeloupe.

The shaking intensity was classified as ‘Very Weak’ (Level II on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale), meaning it was unlikely to cause damage or be noticeable by residents. The earthquake released an estimated 2 x 10⁹ joules of seismic energy, roughly equivalent to 0.477 tons of TNT.

The nearest active volcano to the epicenter is Soufrière Hills in Montserrat, approximately 120 km away. However, there have been no indications of volcanic activity related to this event.

While Antigua and Barbuda and surrounding islands occasionally experience small tremors, this earthquake posed no significant threat to the region. Authorities and seismic monitoring agencies continue to observe the area for any further seismic activity.
