The Antigua and Barbuda government continues efforts to facilitate payments to former employees of LIAT 1974 Ltd, as discussions over compensation progress.
Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s Office, Lionel Hurst, confirmed that while the government has no legal obligation to cover outstanding severance, it remains committed to assisting affected workers through a goodwill payment.
“This is a good-faith payment by the Gaston Browne administration in an effort to ensure that the former employees have some resources from their period of employment,” Hurst said.
The first tranche of payments is expected to be drawn from a bond valued at more than $16 million.
However, Hurst did not provide an update on how many former employees had taken up the offer or when disbursements would be completed.
“The reference to LIAT was introduced by the Financial Secretary, who is not directly attached to the problem, except for providing the funding so that it can be transferred to past LIAT employees,” he said.
The issue of unpaid severance has remained contentious since LIAT 1974 Ltd entered administration, with former staff across the region pushing for full settlements.
Antigua and Barbuda has led regional efforts to provide some form of compensation, as negotiations with other shareholder governments continue.
Further updates on the process are expected in the coming weeks.

It’s about time that employees receive the compensation they’re owed.
it’s a shame that so many people had to wait this long.
I hope all the employees get what they deserve!!!!!!!!
Don’t let that fool you. What they offering and the time period over which it is to be paid is bs.
Going to court on this matter? The deal ain’t reasonable as u think…
