In 2025 when the teachers took industrial action, the Prime Minister and his cabinet made the decision to remove the Permanent Secretary as it would appear that the embarrassment in the educationsystem was her fault. A new one was put in place and that brings us to present day.
Question? Who is evaluating her to ensure that the Ministry of Education, one of the major Ministries in the government is functioning properly? In my humble opinion the Ministry of Education is not functioning any better that it was last year!
Added to disgruntled teachers are disgruntled education officers who have taken industrial action, non functioning departments, people getting paid while they are at home because they have no space to work, limited or no supplies to departments, mold in the building, lack of communication with staff, a toxic work environment and the icing on the cake staff who could not work for a full day because the building has mold are now being paid overtime to change file jackets.
So I ask the question again; who is evaluating the present Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education to ensure that there is not a repeat of what happened last year?
This lady is all talk, plenty gossip, no action! She avoids dealing with issues, like last year she conveniently went on vacation when the issue of mold being in the building came up. She’s back out to work and not a word from her.
She should not have been given the Ministry of Education in the first place. I dare say this is a set up for failure! I dare say that this is why things will never get better because of actions like these.
I am asking the Prime Minister to please cast his eyes on the Ministry of Education because there might just be a repeat of what happened last year in the education arena. Just get it right!

Hmm..
=> Customs
=> Immigrations Department
=> Transport Board
=> Inland Revenue
=> Social Security
=> Education Levy Department
These are by far the heavy duty labor of the Government in term of collecting millions and millions of dollars from the citizens and foreigners and deposit in the Treasury. Still those departments can be reshaped to be more efficient. They are using outdated systems that need a ridiculous amount of papers that most of them need to be filled BY HAND, and most cases you need to repeat them every single time you come back to them. But anyway, they are working.
The rest, are just a BLEEDING DEPARTMENTS that have more benefits and allowances than members of the ones i mentioned. Transport Board Inspector collect in one single Day thousand and thousand of dollars just Saying “Left light, Right Light, Mash your Brakes” and he need to get in a buss to go Home, but at same time we have a huge government workers just sitting down complaining that his Office isn’t big enough or the AC doesn’t work properly, or the huge Building have some kind of Mold, but at the end are doing nothing and no a credible purpose of what is his role. IS so simple evaluation of how important is your role.
You can send the whole Minister of Education Staff to holiday for 3 month and NOTHING is going to happens, just a bunch of Bureaucracy papers that will pile up but it doesn’t affect the functionality of the country.
You can say the same with Lot of Ministries that we can send home all workers and nothing is going to happens. Well yes, something is going to be very noticeable, we are going to have a superavit of Cash in Treasury and no longer have a deficitiary Government Budget.
In that way the Government no need to rush to collect to much Taxes and Inflation will be under control.
The rest is a Populist system trying to “Employ” under the Umbrella of Government as much you can, to mask the figures of “Unemployment” on statistics, but the reality you are just covering this with Debts.
Huge % of our population don’t believe in their capacity to do better and learn to do a Trade.
They blame “Government wrong doing, Centuries of Slavery, White People Supremacy” as the reason to not push themselves to shake up. The fact there is a lot of our population that in the same land, under the same law, under he same sun are doing pretty well with their life, is because the successful ones just have the ambition to do better and refuse to give up their dreams.
Legitimate questions. Accountability is critical
Let us blame the 39ers and then forgive them. They did not try to preserve the good systems and practices left by the British. Those standards could have served us well as a base to build on. But, with their limited knowledge and understanding, we can give them a “blye”. Those who came after however, deserve to be beaten with the proverbial stripes. It was their job to build a national spirit and create standards that would further lift the nation to where it is supposed to be. Instead, they “hired hands” from Guyana and elsewhere that taught them the ways of grift and greed on what was handed to them. To become rich beyond their belief, it became necessary to dilute the Antiguan population to stay in power. Later, the offer of gifts at election time became a further means of staying in power. That has now found its way into our young generation who are settling for the above plus “jam and wine”.
None of this is a recipe for nation building but this is where we are and we need a way back. Obviously, we will need to remove the present administration to achieve anything other than what we have. At the same time we might have to make a number of changes before we make politicians realize that we are serious but Antigua and Barbuda is good enough for us to fight for and fight we must.
