Dear Editor,
I recently visited your news portal and came across a letter written by a nurse concerning the adversities that she and some of her peers are facing from their superiors on their job site.
It would be remiss of me not to join with the said nurse and share the same sentiments that she has expressed. The bullish & don’t care behavior of some persons in the administrative positions, seems to be an epidemic that is very prevalent within the establishments of the govt & statutory boards.
I cannot help but ask… why do some of these persons sitting in these administrative positions within the public and statutory sectors, act like Kings & Queens of all surveys?
Over the years, there have been many criticisms & complaints about the lack of professionalism from the public sector & statutory staff. Infact, it has also been quite noticeable that some of these organizations are not growing the way they should. Hence, the question is why?
The simple answer is… When the top is slack then the bottom will also become slack.
It is my view that many of these managers, supervisors and alike, have operated more on their personal ego rather than acting professionally and from what has been learnt from their authentic training. For them it’s all about their academic acumen which they think give them the right to flex their muscles and exercise the ” do as I say ” syndrome because they are the boss & they think that they are always right”.
The ” flexing of muscles ” syndrome has created issues on many jobsites. Challenges from the lower staff becomes a problem. Individuals become victims of insubordination and is seen as disrespectful should there be any opposing views .. At the end of the day these same individuals on the lower end of the corporate ladder find themselves being punished of being overlooked for promotions & been pushed aside from selections to attend workshops or any other formal training.
Interestingly, it is also noted that some within in the hierarchy enjoy speaking to their staff in a condescending manner. Some enjoy creating classifications among the staff based on the employee’s strength and weaknesses. Some may even find frivolous reasons to justify nepotism. Others would give staff baskets to carry water. Promises would be made and not kept. Some even avoid acknowledging the efforts put in by their employees.
Obviously, such action by the hierarchy does more harm than good to the organization. It creates tension, divides the staff and cause the staff to have poor comaraderie.
The law of physics states ” Every action has an equal reaction “. Those in the hierarchy need to understand that the modus of operandi is not all about themselves but it includes each staff member who needs to be treated with respect & dignity. We need to be cognizant that each staff member makes up the corporate chain.

I endorse this letter.
Because at the hospital I’m also a victim of all that was said
Even kings and queens have much respect for those they come into contact with
they have the CHAOS DEMON syndrome……Man Cow disease or Lipstick Hog illness
My work place is no different talk about bullying victimizing you name it. The place needs to shuffle up like day before yesterday. They don’t like you so they put everyone against you when that stop working, they victamize you to the coor.
I have to endorse this letter. This runs like a disease among the rank and file.
Management 101 teaches the importance of good, solid interpersonal relationships with those whom you lead.
In most cases, seldom do you find the suggestions for improvement coming from the top,but they insist on eliminating imput from the subordinates.
Hence, the problems on the job will persist to the detriment of our country
Exactly
Good question.
I worked at a Funeral Parlor,,where,,bullying and favoritism was a daily thing.During the COVID outbreak,it especially, reared it’s head, when the prices for removals, and burials of Covid victims quadrupled,,a certain few would take home 5 ,6 ,Thousand per week,,whilst some others,,in the same department,,barely made a thousand.
Antiguans are cursed. Period. They can’t run anything but into the ground.
If non- nationals in big positions are also wreaking havoc, it’s because no qualified Antiguan was there which still proves my point.
Antiguans are cursed.
There are 2 major contributing factors.
In the public sector due to political interference (both UPP when in power & ABLP), there is no real discipline as there are political square pegs in round holes with lots of power. PS’s are afraid to manage and discipline. Then on the other side of the coin, many get jobs as political favours and really should not be there.
In the private sector again 2 problems. Firstly, corrupt unions that take union dues but are beholden to the employers for kickbacks and favour’s. And secondly, employers here employ cheap labour, so in most instances the wrong people are in the jobs, because they take the low pay and poor work conditions.
The selfish nature of staff members cause those in authority to behave the way do. They spend time kissing the boss’s ass to get where they want to get & keep quiet when they see injustice meted out to their peers.
The pig is heard squealing only when the stone hits him ….
I agree with this letter and frankly, practically all the comments from bloggers.
Folks with thr advance degree of knowledge are not in the appropriate positions/helm and politicians will not fire their voters and politicians will not fire themselves.
They want all the money and power.
@ ALL FOR SELF: You hit the nail right on the head. Those persons in the top position tend to be filled with DECEIPT, ARROGANCE & SELFISHNESS. They also think that those employees at lower end are illiterate which is so ridiculous. These people in the senior position need to understand that they have to be careful how they treat people because KARMA can a bitch
Although this is a dumb question, I will join the discussion. Ever since mankind feels empowered when giving position. In the same post about the nurses complaint I have mentioned about the problem when one is promoted from within. They do not get the respect from their peers. Humans by nature demand respect. Even in biblical days, those jews that had been given power and authority by the occupying romans would yield with their power over the other jews. And yes they were hated amongst the jews. Especially the tax collectors. It is therefore no wonder that the disciples were very disturbed that Jesus decided to go and dine at the house of the most feared tax collector Zacchaeus.
The slave master also understood that given some slave authority over others was better than to run the plantation all by themselves. The same is true these days with giving people position in any company or government. They suddenly feel empowered and elevated above the rest. It is human nature. And anyone of you would do and feel the same when you have power. Give a man power and you will see his true character is as statement that is so true. I always laugh when thinking of the movie Bruce Almighty with Morgan Freeman. When Bruce was given power he used it to his advantage. Like getting the woman he so loved.
Once again given someone power only reveal their character.
I tend to believe that some persons have unreasonable expectations and as a result React in a negative way when they don’t come through. As a society we have failed to make a successful transition from a colony with a history of slavery and exploitation to an Independent nation developing its our contemporary identity and achievements in creating modern standards. Let us work together to make a positive transformation for a new future. STOP COMPLAINING AND LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Many persons are migrating from the private sector to the statutory establishments because of the high salaries & fringe benefits these statutory establishments are offering.
These same persons are taking up the top positions & looking out for their friends & cronies and at the same time trample on the person who is at the lower end of the employment ladder.
In one of King Obstinate songs he mentioned if there is honey in the rock let everyone enjoy it.
A former Political minister even mentioned that they are holding high offices but their work output do not show it. Ask him.
