Dear Editor,

Please allow me some space on your platform to express my disgust of how some of us, as managers, abuse our position to elevate and bring onboard friends & cronies into the establishment that we work for.

Such actions seem to be very prevalent in the govt and statutory sectors, causing some of the beneficiaries to become square pegs in round wholes.

Many  of us who are in an authoritative position, sometimes allow our ego to become inflated and hence, allow the devine human attribute of humility, respect, empathy & compassion to be swept out of the window, causing our subordinates to be treated with disdain and in a condescending manner.

As a manager & simultaneously a strong believer in Christ, I have made a pledge to speak out against any injustice that I think has been metted out to any coworker of mine, whether that person is a messenger,  a clerk or a fellow manager.

Isaiah 10:1-2 states “Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights…”
Fair must be fair. The job site should be a level playing field for all. What goes for Peter should go for Paul.

In recent times, where I am employed, I have seen several wrongs metted out to some of my colleagues, resulting from the improper & unprofessional decisions, made by the hierarchy to hire & promote persons up the corporate ladder…..

For instance, persons have been seen dining frequently at the same dinner table with those in authority and not producing as much as their peers but yet get promoted infront of others who deserves a promotion. In addition, it also been seen that persons who belong to the same extracurricular organization as  the respective manager, slips through the cracks to get hired. Of course such actions prompt many questions.

Obviously, the ” knee in the neck ” trauma that the Afro American Mr George Floyd experienced, comes to mind and it seems as though it has become a prevailing epidemic within the work place. Unfortunately, a selective set of employees are left to be stifled on the job, due to the dishonorable practices executed from some of those in authority.

Sadly, although the records may show that hard work & dedication have been put into the  organization by many of these sidelined employees, some have become victims of discrimination and nepotism and hence, they have been (1) overlooked (2) pushed to the back of the corporate bus and (3) have the corporate ladder pulled from under them causing such employees to be stagnant in the organization.

It is very unfortunate, that the colleagues of these victims choose not to advocate loud enough for justice on their behalf. Perhaps their voices will only be heard when that ” injustice ” reaches to their front door.

If we are Christian nation and follow the doctrines and principles of Jesus Christ, then now is the time to be our brother’s keeper. While Jesus was on His mission, He got radical and spoke out against the wrongs that He saw,  so why can’t I?

Alex

  1. Alex this was very well written and I applaud you for saying “some of us, as managers”.

Take it a step further. Implement a process where you work for reporting such incidences anonymously so that individuals do not feel targeted or victimized and make sure you encourage your staff to feel free to come to you.

  2. NEPOTISM happens everywhere, even here in the US at Federal Govt level, where I work it is in your face and there is nothing you can do about it. You can be a scholar and an exceptional employee, but the friends and family will get more opportunities and you will be overlooked. It’s life, but best way to avoid all of that is to own your own business so you don’t have to go beg somebody for opportunity.

  3. If this article was dedicated to APUA, and it’s electricity manager and superintendent and supervisors? Where close friends and cliques are put in possession as square pegs and the APUA is still far behind some a the small island utilities. These supervisor have no clue, they learn the trade picture graphically, No standards in utility construction as in measurement and staking sheet data, water department digging trenches without shoring it or slanting tools for trenches up to certain depth, special shoring crew to assemble shore jacks and wall to prevent trench collapse on the workers repairing pipes 6 and 8 feet and beyond beneath the ground.
The APUA constant suppression of electricity without the consequences of losing revenue as would have obtain in let’s say the USA if the power goes off the stock market plunges and the utility company face bankruptcy, but APUA seem to magically sustain itself piggy backing on estimated bills, they have to modernize to work hotline without power interruption, the present electrical engineers and electricity manager are just in entitlement position, and the supervisors don’t have a clue.
In public work and all areas of government including the police force, the cry is the same. But these politicians come to power without policy, when the UPP came to office and had a chance to clean up the square pegs in APUA, public works, the police force and all area of government, they did nothing but leave the entitlement cliques to continue stagnate the country, and ALP came and did the same , especially in APUA where they allowed the general manager and electricity manager to destroy APUA infrastructure and now has to tender contracts to supply electricity to Antigua.

  4. @lionman:

I cannot agree with your sentiments.

Yes, it true that nepotism is plaguing the world but if an exam is set rather than the hierarchy been given the opportunity to choose who they want for the job then the selection process will be a lot more transparent.

However your reasoning to become an entrepreneur will definitely eliminate the biasness.

  5. Alex, you are in deep thought and I suppose that you are commenting as a victim. You need to call out the perpetrator. It is ofcourse unfair to be elevated after being scratched and snatched from the bottom of the barrel while YOU were being more than loyal.

  6. @Watching from the side we all do not have to agree lol but you really don’t know how things go. I work in the Federal Government and by law they are supposed to send out announcements for job vacancies. The management and supervisors already hand pick the individual to obtain that position, but by law they have to put out the announcement. They would put out the announcement for the job vacancy for two days and close it immediately. If they job announcement has multiple candidates to apply for the vacancy and they know the candidates are far more superior and more qualified than their friend they will close the job vacancy announcement. You think just because a people take an exam then you will fairly obtain the employment, wrong. They will just discontinue the job vacancy until they can get their friend in the position. I see it happening all the time here at the Federal institution I am at. There are more friends and family being hired due to Nepotism and it’s the same thing that occurs in the Caribbean.

  7. @ Real Antiguan why is it that you have that sentiment that everybody can’t own their own business. So many people come to Antigua and start business and I’m not talking about rich people who have lucrative funds. I’m talking about other Caribbean people from the region who come with less and opportunities are created for self. Spanish people come and they start businesses even if it take them a long time to start. How is it that our ancestors able to start ah likkle business back in the days when times were harder but these days when times are easier and information is more accessible that we cannot do for ourselves. Even Africans can come and start business here.

  8. A very interesting article.

One particular Statutory Board located in St. John’s is very much guilty of nepotism.

Sometimes one has to wonder if the organization is operating as a cult.
