Dear Editor,
I think the time has come that the electoral commission should establish a criteria for persons who are desirous to run for public office.
A person should not be qualified for the job unless certain standards are met, both academically & professionally.
Sadly, some of our parliamentarians have become a laughing stock.
It is evident that certain parliamentarians are unable to make a worthwhile contribution on behalf of their constituents, their constituency & towards nation’s building.
Presently, it should not be a surprise to hear what is happening with the St. George’s representative.
The story is slowly unfolding that the Hon. Algernon Watts, Serpant, did not enter politics because of a conviction of civic pride towards the St. George’s constituents or the country at large.
I am also of a firm belief that he did not enter into politics for self enrichment or fame. However, i think he used the political opportunity to prove to the PM & to the electorate, that he has the antidote for the Labour party opponent, and simultaneously be a thorn in the Labour party’s flesh.
It is clear as crystal that Serpant has proved his point and without a doubt, in my view, he has accomplished his goal that he had set out to do.
During the election period, Serpant knew that he was a very popular figure, because of his radio program, which was the catalyst that propelled him to such popularity.
As a result, it would have been, an ideal time to consider Serpant as the right choice to be a candidate to run against the Labour party..
Serpant, knew also it was the perfect time to throw his hat into the political ring.
At the time, the Labour party was heading down a political precipice which had resulted from the woes of the water issues, the high cost of living, the gas crisis, and the Covid 19 saga. All odds were against the Labour party & its candidates.
Did Serpant accomplish his primary goal? Yes He certainly did! But now, he has work to do but unfortunately, he is faced with the embarrassment of not performing his role efficiently, as an honourable parliamentarian.
Unfortunately, he has found himself acting like lame duck, struggling to keep up with the status quo.
Serpant’s absences from parliament speaks volumes. His antaganistic behaviour to assist his constituents says alot also. Now, he has been evicted from his branch office. What is next?
Too many things are happening with Serpant.
Obviously, he is not ready for the job. Perhaps he should call it a day and allow for a by-election to take place.
I am now left to wonder if the constituents for the St. George’s constituency, are now having regrets that they voted for him during the general election. Time will tell!!

Only the people of St. George’s can answer this question….
I too was excited when he won even though I am not from that constituency, but then he fell silent. I too believed that he ran to prove that he could win and not because he thought that he could make a difference, but Antiguans love to gossip and talk, and the talk was that he was missing in action.
I think it will be a slap in the face to the people of St. George’s if he tried to run again because how is he going to gauge is successes since he won? What can he say that he’s done?
Hoping someone from the constituency can step forward and let us know.
Thou fool!!!!!!

@straightshooter. Is it everything is a fight? Are all political views so ignorant and tunnel-visioned. This was a well written, balanced and factual assessment. And the writer is correct. Forget the past. Going forward Antiguans and Barbudans must be more concerned about people we elect. Decisions they make affect our lives and future. Forget voting for a person because he talks loud but has no substance. Stop voting blindly because your parents voted a certain way. Assess the candidates in your constituents honestly before making a decision. Do not make that decision based on your heart but your head. Once elected most of them disappear any way but all you can hope for is that they will work to make the country and our lives better.
One look at that photo and you can tell he was NOT ready for the serious job of being an MP. Neither him nor the WINKKUP PASTOR!!!
Serpent isn’t doing anything different that most candidates on the Labour Party side is doing the difference is the Gastonites and some Labourites are out politicking the UPites it’s for the UPPites to step up their game
@ Speak up St Georges, Fake Rovi and OTTO
The Labour Party is really realising their investment in A As if Point FM, ABS, ZDK and Chet’s station were not enough.
The party really seems extreeemlyyyyyyyy anxious and desperate that they are losing the support of the populace.
Why is pixie running for political office?
What exactly has pixie done for her constituents?
Eh?
What?
Please do a write up on pixie and let serpent be..
Why is she so silent, and she’s the minister of public works..eh why??
Give me a break! Smh!
Someone needs to tell Serpent to button up his shirt. Are we living in the 70’s? Who in there right mind would think that is a good look for a politician.
He had plenty talk on the radio, but politics is a different beast.
Serpent mean well, but sometimes it look like he biting off more than he can chew.
He brought fire to the airwaves, but governing takes more than mic skills.
exactly!!!! That’s what he needs to stick to!!!! Full a big chat on radio and Facebook, but quiet like a church mouse in Parliament where it really counts!!!
Just listen to the classless Antiguans try to defend the honour’s of a serpent! Have we become so devoid of standards? Straight Shooler seems particularly aggrieved . 😁😁 Why the chivalry in rushing to its defense? Is it your partner?
And to your fellow harem-dweller, what “thorn in the flesh” was he to the PM? He crawls at least ten classes below that of the PM. Have you guys fallen so far below the basic standards of what constitutes intelligent, effective governance that a serpent has become a poster boy for the UPP? The serpent never failed to reveal its true qualities – as Wilmouth Daniel! Ask the late Winston Derrick. Ask his former co-accused D.Jezebel. Only those persons secretly wishing to see the total collapse if the UPP would continue to uphold and encourage the serpent to destroy what little is left of UPP integrity. Isn’t the UPP desperate to find a space for the “Lub blow” Lovell? An excellent idea, if I may say so myself!
Why is it Faithful #1 doesn’t go and have his head examined by a physciatrist the amount of nonsense he spews daily is unbelievable, I asking young men in this country please avoid shit shit shankers
Folks…you all dont realize the we voted for serpent because WE WANTED TO GET RID OF DEAN…But truth be told, we never could have envisioned that he would turn out to be so useless in his position. Not a fan of Freeland (Rayne is my boy), but serpent OUTSIDE next time around.

Many times, I’ve read several comments of yours and I’ve the question WHAT ARE TRYING TO PROVE OR WHO ARE TRYING TO IMPRESS with your verbosity?
Being verbose Sir, will not convince the masses that you are an intellect, especially in this day & age.

I have always been a committed supporter of the United Progressive Party (UPP), and my loyalty to the party and its core principles remains steadfast. As a proud resident of St. George’s, I’ve followed our constituency’s political journey closely. However, I must admit that I am deeply disappointed with the current representation and direction, particularly when it comes to the candidate, Serpent.
While I continue to believe in the broader vision and policies of the UPP, I do not find Serpent to be an inspiring or unifying figure. His leadership style does not resonate with me, nor do I feel he has been genuinely supportive or engaged with the grassroots concerns of our community. Representation requires more than a voice in Parliament — it demands empathy, accessibility, and a vision that brings people together. Sadly, I have not seen that reflected in his tenure or public posture.
Given this, I find myself in a difficult position. I could never support the Antigua Labour Party (ALP), as their track record and approach are fundamentally at odds with my values and hopes for our nation’s future. Yet, I cannot in good conscience lend my vote to a candidate I do not believe in, simply for the sake of party loyalty.
Therefore, come election day, I will abstain. It is not a decision I take lightly, but one grounded in principle. I believe that meaningful political change must start with candidates who truly earn the trust and confidence of the people they seek to represent.
