Dear Editor,
It is becoming increasingly frustrating to witness how some members of our police force in Antigua and Barbuda conduct their “stop and search” exercises.
While no one disputes the importance of law enforcement in maintaining public safety, there must be a level of common sense and consideration when these operations are carried out.

To block or delay traffic at 7:30 a.m., right when parents are trying to get their children to school and workers are rushing to reach their jobs on time, is not only inconsiderate, it’s counterproductive.
That is one of the busiest times of the day, and instead of ensuring order, these exercises end up creating chaos, unnecessary frustration, and in some cases, even aggression.
If the goal is to reduce crime or find offenders, there are smarter and more strategic ways to do so. Conducting searches during morning rush hour does not send the message of efficiency or professionalism; it sends the message of poor planning and lack of empathy for the public.
The police must remember they are here to serve and protect, not to disrupt and inconvenience.
Morning traffic checkpoints should be limited to urgent operations only — for instance, if there is a high-level alert or ongoing pursuit.
Otherwise, these activities should be done during off-peak hours, late evenings, or strategically at night, when they cause the least interference with the lives of law-abiding citizens.
We all want a safer Antigua and Barbuda, but safety should not come at the expense of common sense and respect for the people.
I urge the Police Administration to review its procedures and apply some practical thinking. The way to build public trust is not by flexing authority, but by exercising wisdom.
Sincerely,
Frustrated Driver

Hmmmm they do have common sense cause that’s the time alot of weapons are going around the country so they have to use their discretion to get some of these criminals off the streets, so if you feel you are gonna get caught in the line of their duty then leave home an hour earlier cause they got to do their work in other to get things done. To me its no special time cause the bandits are brazen out let the men and women do their work that’s their duty its for our own safety .
@Frustrated Driver. So you are telling me that unlicensed drivers, those carrying guns, drugs or other contraband don’t drive during the morning rush hour? Only law-abiding citizens drive their vehicles during that time and those breaking the law only drive during off-peak hours, late evenings and night? The answer is no. Your letter reeks of narcissism. Me first! What about me?! I’m going to be late to work! The police here are damned if they do and damned if they don’t!
Wouldn’t the criminal be in the residential areas knowing people are at work. The rush hour shenanigans is for show, like they are doing something. Need some one with common sense to lead.
Police just can’t win.
Had a friend who was hit by an uninsured and unlicensed vehicle. Had to foot her Jamaica medical bill on her own. There goes her savings for college. Years of rehab, only regained 75 % use of her legs.
I am in support of these police stop & search. It is a realistic response to the times we are living in. If the Police wants to remove uninsured vehicles off the roads. Stop & search is the best way. When is the best time to do such search. Certainly not 10 am on a Sunday morning when the roads are empty. No way. It’s the time of heavy road traffic. That time may be inconvenient to most of us, but that’s it. It is the way it is.
So the criminals can know to do their movements during high traffic times and not off-peak times. Ok….it is done at random times during the day and usually not for long periods because people also usually send messages all over to alert others not to drive particular places when police are on the road.
I don’t know what nonsense I just read in this story BUT say whaaaaaat?
I am really sorry that they are “inconveniencing” you but what better time to catch offenders? I have been in traffic stops and traffic actually moves quite fine except for the unlicensed driver and vehicles with tints too dark and vehicles with expires tags TURNING AROUND TO AVOID DETECTION.
We moan and groan that police aren’t on the road but when they are they are an “inconvenience”.
Tell you what….how about getting out the house 20 minutes earlier just in case.
@carvaa
Boy I tell you. Just cannot please black friggin people. Half the time police on the road people all on social media telling others to avoid the area. So in fact, we are sabotaging our own police force.
They really just cannot win.
That white man police man in particular is not easy at all.
You may feel it’s inconvenient but that may save you life, they may catch the future gun man in that same stop and search line that you are in that would have robbed you fatally.
Just be patient with this barrowed breath of life.
