To: The Leadership of the United Progressive Party (UPP)
Dear UPP Leadership,
I am writing this letter as a concerned supporter who has long wished for better governance and true representation in our country.
I have supported the UPP in the past, most recently in the 2023 elections, despite significant reservations about some of the candidates on your slate.
However, recent events have left me deeply disappointed and questioning my future support for the party.
The situation involving Algernon “Serpent” Watts and the eviction from his constituency branch for non-payment of rent is not just an embarrassment but also a reflection of deeper issues within the party.
Even more troubling is the response — or lack thereof — from party supporters and officials. Rather than acknowledging the wrongdoing and taking a stand for transparency and accountability, many continue to make excuses and defend behavior that is unbecoming of a public representative.
I can excuse an individual with financial challenges and eviction; however, the possibility of illegally subletting, faithfully collecting money under false pretenses, not paying rent, and affecting the development of children in after-school classes is unacceptable.
What message does this send to the electorate, especially to those of us who value integrity over blind loyalty? Is this what you want me to support?
We have heard the calypso, “support your damn party,” but support must be earned through principle, not demanded in the face of wrongdoing.
I was one of many who withheld my vote in the 2018 election because the candidate selection was uninspiring, to say the least.
In 2023, I gave my full support, though I did so reluctantly, disturbed by the inclusion of figures like Mr. Watts and Mr. Bowen. Unfortunately, my instincts were not wrong. A snake may shed its skin, but a leopard does not change its spots.
The party’s biggest challenge remains its candidate selection and leadership choices. Until I see significant improvement in the calibre of representation the UPP offers, I will not be voting.
While I cannot bring myself to vote for the ALP, I will stay home rather than support a party that appears confused, inconsistent, and out of touch with the values it once stood for.
I am aware that some within the party and on social media may choose to attack me for these views. But criticism and abuse are not how you win hearts and minds — they are how you lose them.
I urge the party to take this moment seriously. Restore credibility. Demand higher standards from your representatives. Show the electorate that integrity matters to the UPP.

And the above behavior is why the UPP will never win an election in Antigua again. Whomever the author, like all others decided to remain anonymous, so why does that person have to so-call “man-up” when it’s nothing new. You people are tired hypocrites. And to say, you don’t care if that person votes or stays home is to say you forfeit the election. To win, it takes people, the majority, it takes numbers. The way you people dismiss and disrespect people for their opinions is a clear showing that you have no clue how politics works and you have no idea how to win. And all comments under pseudonyms, hypocrisy at its core. The author is correct. There is NO leadership, all hypocrites brushing their wrong doings under the carpet while pointing out the wrong doings of others. We the people who were looking for better from the UPP can no longer distinguish a difference. Why jump from the pot into the charcoal for the pot calling the kettle black. The UPP in it’s current state call itself a serious or viable opposition. What it can call itself, is a joke. The leader as well as the slate of candidates is the worst ever in the history of the UPP and a SLAP in the face of the electorate.
We hear you but please tell us why you have not voted for the ALP and seemingly will not do so.
That’s why Gaston bought out this rag tag so he can print what he likes and pay people to do the same. Until the person has enough guts to sign his/her name, then it means NOTHING.
If the recent events surrounding Serpent is the meslasuring stick for your support you are not and have never been a UPP supporter.

The events surrounding Serpent should strengthen your resolve in him and the party.
Have you forgotten that the labour party occupied the premises of Gilby as constituency office in City East and when they could not pay and he attempted to evict them they used cabinet and parliament and their majority and compulsorily and forcefully acquired the property.
Is that the unscrupulous behavior you love and want to be associated with?

Serpent and Dave Lester Payne just a hold on to the nostalgia of the derricks observer radio broadcast and everything else as though they intellectually lazy.
Same old background music on the sports and news, and that dirge that Daryl Matthew ward created for the music behind the morning program is still used by Dr Jacqui quin. They even romanticize the derricks voice.
Both radio station observer and progressive radio need new animated sounds behind the talk shows so that a person’s ability to entertain is not taxed, because it is not all people are articulate extroverts.
The observer newspaper credibility is reduced to just a pdf repetitious print of the government pronouncement, no investigative journalism, ok then convert it into an online interactive newspaper not only like ANR but even better, in the virgin islands and other places they reduce the fear and restrictions of contributive bloggers by only requiring a nick name to blog and not all that info about email, and the observer will get advertising to help financially.
We can’t help it if it is perceived that ANR is ALP and Gaston own or affiliated, they put in the work even though they are in power.
