The United Progressive Party (UPP) missed the mark when they Rejected Hon Richard Lewis for Leadership.
Once buoyed by momentum after the last election, the party seemed poised for a comeback. However, internal divisions and personal jealousies ultimately derailed their chances, leading to a decision that some now see as a critical mistake: the rejection of Hon. Richard Lewis.

Richard Lewis is a dedicated and accomplished politician. With over 25 years of service to the UPP, including more than a decade in the House of Representatives, he has earned respect and a reputation for leadership.
His academic achievements, a double master’s degree, highlight his commitment to excellence and service.
Yet, despite his experience and proven track record, the party’s leadership, led by Harold Lovell, chose to dismiss him when it mattered most.

The reasons for this rejection are complex and tinged with personal politics.
Sources close to the party suggest that jealousy and rivalry played a significant role, clouding judgment and impeding the party’s strategic vision.
Instead of recognizing Richard Lewis as the best candidate to rally support and bring the party back into power, the leadership dismissed him, believing they could find a different path forward.

In the aftermath of this decision, the consequences were devastating. Richard Lewis was politically torn down, his reputation tarnished, and his future in politics seemed uncertain.
The rejection not only undermined his chances of securing his seat in rural West at the next convention but also damaged his standing within the party and among his supporters.
Now, the party has to take a backward step in bringing back Mr.Lovell to take the reigns of leadership.

No mark was “missed” whatsoever!!
The people have spoken and their voices were heard loud and clear. The ONE AND ONLY DULY ELECTED LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IS THE HON. LARS JAMALE PRINGLE.
They clearly chose who THEY wanted, not who the writer thought they wanted.
PRINGLE it was
PRINGLE it is
PRINGLE it shall be
BORING!!!
Why keep going over the past? Yes, it was a missed opportunity by the UPP at the time of not electing the Honourable Richard Lewis as leader of the party, but why dwell on this, unless it’s just another way of ‘loosely’ trying to denigrate the recent emergence of the Most Honourable – and experienced – Harold Lovell who is now back in the fold.
You can almost feel the desperation of the writer, the ABLP members and their lickspittling supporters.
I look forward to reading more of their inane nonsense in the coming days and weeks …
Bullfoot soup 🥣 and popcorn 🍿 at the ready folks 😋
There is a rule in Queen shows, Calypso shows and all competitions:
THE JUDGES DECISION IS FINAL! No one is “entitled” to the crown. The judges determine the winner. The electorate are the judges of the candidates. The electorate determine the winner.
I am in full agreement with you that the UPP missed a perfect opportunity.
It has taught me that the UPP geriatrics are not about nation building.
They are bunch of loyalists who cannot see further than the fingertips of their outstretched hands.
They rejected Richard Lewis for a man who cannot publicly speak and spell his name.
Since they rejected Richard Lewis I whole heartedly welcome the return of Harold Lovell.
Under no circumstance could I agree to be lead by Pringle.
Not even to the gas chamber to be executed.
Might I remind the loyalists: a flock of sheep lead by a lion can defeat all the wolves. However a pack of lions lead by a sheep is already defeated.
Except the present leadership is moved my vote will remain in my head.
I advise Hon Richard Lewis to stand firm.
After Pringle and his loyalists have destroyed the party we will build a new party from scratch.
Lovell, you better act quickly.
We will stand with you.
However NOT with, beside, alongside, ahead, behind, Jamal Pringle.
Sick and tired of these attempts by Richard to still to show he power hungry, desperate and thirsty. Give it up bro. Pringle done beat you fair and square.
You too cocky Richard. You min overconfident and the voters humbled you big time!!! You purposely leaked that letter to the media claiming that 4 MPs endorsed you. As you can see that crumbled.
You purposely BOYCOTT PRINGLE SWEARING IN CEREMONY at Government House. You refuse to work with Pringle. You no longer show up for UPP activities. . How you expect to run on UPP ticket when you show disdain for the UPP and its Leader????
Wah kinda world you a live in boss? The UPP needs to take disciplinary action against you. It’s like you “in” the party but “not of” the party.
Make up your double-minded mind.
@ Brix
Hey pal. You gotta be careful what you write. You wrote “Why keep going over the past? Yes, it was a missed opportunity by the UPP at the time of not electing the Honourable Richard Lewis as leader of the party,……..”
In your comments you are actually endorsing and agreeing with the writer. IF the writer is an ABLP “operative” as you suggest, then you are agreeing with the ABLP. Careful buddy.
Are we so blinded politically that we cannot even see the truth when it is staring up right in the face?
Whether you agree or not, the writer is correct and the UPP definitely missed the mark on this one. There IS party division and backstabbing. Just count the number of members who recently left and the reasons they cited.
Whether you support the UPP or not, come on….you can at least be honest with yourself. The mark was indeed missed.
Richard Lewis is.my man but he has been rejected for leadership twice. The people spoke.
Harold Lovell will win in all saints west. Then what!! He is also no gonna replace Pringle, Pringle is a winner. Period!!!
Imagine winning so many seats in the last election, coming so very close to dislodging the indomitable Gaston Browne and his team, losing by SIX votes, only to Mashup the entire progress by derailing the efforts of one of the finest and smartest leaders in the current political class!!!
I have always said that the UPP no lub nobody an a chue.
Richard Lewis should have been the opposition leader to face off with Gaston Browne in the parliament and outside of the parliament. Je is the future of the UPP and the truth is the truth. Lovell has a losing track Record and both as a political leader and a follower!!!
@Wisdom
He only appears to be “smart” because Pringle is so illiterate!!! Richard is NOT leadership material. He just doesn’t have what it takes. Even the Lipstick 💄 Hag has more balls than him.
A leader is about people and that is definitely not Richard.
People question his allegiance to Antigua
Doesn’t the lipstick Hag have more balls than all the men in the UPP. The point is the UPP missed the mark big time but the delusional and people looking only for their own self-interest will never see that. Can you imagine how more powerful a force the Party would be under the
leadership of Lewis and a United Party. Many people and the business community have no confidence in Pringle and that is a major problem.
@ Who No Hear Will Feel
You are so right with that statement.
“UPP missed the mark big time with the delusionals of UPP Executive Committee.
Many are people looking only for their own self-interest; and they are nothing but losers.
The downward spiral of the UPP did not begin with the leadership election fight.
When Pringle was chosen over Lewis for leadership the dam broke.
The storm appeared when Cleon Athill left and wrote a schathing letter about the internal conflicts plaguing UPP that led to her departure.
Since then UPP as an organization has been dysfunctional.
There is no rhyme or reason why Pringle should not have been replaced by Lewis, other than the selfish people prevailed.
Who in their right mind really thinks Antiguans and Barbudans are so upset with Gaston Browne and The ALBP that they would default to Pringle as Prime Minister. Never happen.
I have never heard any other reason in favour of Pringle other than: THE ONE AND ONLY DULY ELECTED LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IS THE HON. JAMALE PRINGLE
Is that why he should be the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda?
@Brixtonian
UPP missed the mark big time when a few delusionals rigged the election. It has been kept a secret like the motive behind the murder of Asot.
Harold Lovell has high name recognition, but his undesirables are high.
In politics, when a candidate has high name recognition but also high “undesirables,” it presents a complex situation.
While name recognition is generally a strong advantage, as it signifies voter awareness and familiarity, a high undesirable rating indicates a significant portion of the electorate views them negatively
“Undesirables” are a major hurdle: High “undesirables” suggest that voters have concerns about the candidate’s character, policies, or past actions.
These negative perceptions can be difficult to overcome and can lead to voters casting ballots for an opponent, even if that opponent is less known.
Lewis now has high high name recognition and desirables.
There is the potential for “hold your nose and vote” scenarios: In situations where voters don’t have strong feeling either way for both candidates or find themselves in a tightly contested Party leadership; they may still choose the high name recognition candidate over a less known opponent, particularly if they feel that candidate is the only viable option for UPP to win the general election.
I am of the opinion that Gaston Browne will be able to do a job on Lovell that he cannot do on Lewis.
Keep in mind what ever excitement there is for Lovell’s return, is because it universally recognized that Pringle just don’t have what it takes to mount a credible campaign; as a UPP leader against Gaston Browne
@ Baby Judas.
Obviously you do not understand the term “the people spoke”
It was a party leadership election not a general election. That’s when that term applies
Same how people can say that the ABLP missed the mark by a long shot when they put greedy, corrupt, Gatson Browne as Leader of our nation, and by extension, they miss the mark by a long shot when they made this sticky finger swindler, finance minister.
The man has squandered all the tax revenues and hefty duties he has collected over the pass 12 years, with nothing much to show for it. He still had to come and squeeze more money out of the tax payers to fix the woefully delapidated roads, and now he’s coming after the people’s SS money to further waste in more dumb investment like jolly beach.
So continue to be blind to this inept Government that’s in power, because the lies are all in the faces of the people. No more hiding Gatson Browne.
So tell me writer of this article.
Where is all the peoples tax money that was collected over the pass 12 years, because I cannot see the effects of it in Antigua?
And oh, I forgot about the atrociously bad crime problem in Antigua over the past 10 years, where they even manage to get rid of Asot…yes people, we have forgotten.
So keep talking you ABLP fools.
@Islanman26
After socking the people with exorbitant vehicular license fees; they are putting Social Security money into a money pit.
And there is so much more, that it’s sickening.
It can’t get worse than that right now.
The question for all of us who are desirous of change.
Who is the politician most suitable to kick ABLP ass to kingdom come?
A future with ABLP is a path to crime and poverty and mental health issues.
Who has what it takes to inspire the electorate with his or her political skills and intellect to motivate voters to vote for a Better future for Antigua and Barbuda?
@another day.
Those are the tough questions at the pole in the next election, and from what we have seen in the last election, the people are quite fed-up of this government. So I hope they get it right next time, because from the inception of the ABLP winning the last general election, it’s only been continues caios in Antigua, so go figure.
The old adage still remains..” you reap what you sow”, and this corrupt seed that has been planted in Antigua in the Gatson Brownes lead government, is bearing it’s ugly fruits right now, and that cannot be denied by a long shot.
These people want us to not believe our lying eyes… 😂.
But on a serious note..we all know corruption is a recipe for serious problems in any country, and it has been proven in Antigua over and over.
So the only choice the people have, is to not elect corrupt people to lead them, simple.
There is no perfect world, but living under the stress of corrupt leaders is just a heavy burden no people can carry.
The UPP is not perfect by any means, but one thing you cannot say about many of their heads, is that they are not corrupt people..some may call them ” dunces”, but it will be hard to call the likes of Lovell, Mr Lewis, and even Mr Pringle corrupt. And that’s what people needs to look at, and ask themselves..why is Antigua going through such serious crime problem right now?
And if we are not going to look at leaders and heod them accountable, then all of us need to shut up and just sit our arses under a tree somewhere, because invariably, we are also part of the problem in electing these corrupt politicians.
So let’s see how smart our people are!
