As a born Antiguan & Barbudan who works tirelessly in the local workforce, doing my best each day to move ahead in life, the government’s housing scheme stood out as a powerful symbol of hope.
It was a commendable initiative designed to give ordinary, hardworking citizens a chance at stability and homeownership in a country where opportunities often feel out of reach.
From the very beginning, one guideline was made clear:

These homes are not to be rented, AT ALL!
They were intended for ownership, not investment. For families, not for income generation. For locals who need stable housing, not for profit-making ventures.
This rule exists for an important reason. It protects the integrity of the program, ensures fairness, and prioritizes residents who live here, work here, pay taxes here, and contribute to the daily life and economic growth of Antigua & Barbuda.
Yet the reality on the ground tells a different story.

It is deeply disheartening that so many Antiguans & Barbudans who are here at home applying, waiting, hoping; are still unable to secure one of these government homes.
Meanwhile, some individuals living overseas have acquired these houses and are renting them out, often to students or short-term occupants, in direct violation of the program’s rules.
This issue is especially visible in the Paynters area, where multiple properties allocated through the housing scheme have reportedly been turned into rental units. For those who are still struggling to find an affordable place to live, this feels not only unfair but also discouraging.
For many of us in the workforce, these homes represent more than just shelter. They represent stability, dignity, and the chance to finally move forward.
So when the opportunity is misused, the entire purpose of the programme is lost and the very people it was designed to help are the ones left struggling the most.

You are obviously not, neither is a relative of yours a member of the ALBP.
When Gaston said a community is a “Garrison “ for the ALBP; its meaning and implications were not understood or ignored.
Time to wake up!
Regardless of who buys the properties, you cannot tell the owner what to do with their own house.
Yes the initiative is a good one and means well, but once the ownership has been transferred, the owner has full autonomy on its purpose UNLESS there is a clause in the purchase agreement that states that the house cannot be rented.
The trick is to keep them out of the hands of people “with money”, but even that can be circumvented. Just let someone else buy it for you.
Truth is all of us are wicked humans regardless of political party and we will always corrupt a perfectly well intention system. We are greedy and it will always be about me, me, me, me and guess who else…me.
Amazing postings . Thanks a lot
@ UNLESS,
Sorry don’t tarnish others either the “Truth is all of us are wicked humans regardless of political party”
You are what you are but everyone is not like you.
The issue is two fold. People living abroad are able to purchase some of these houses when government workers are not. If this is really happening; it says several things:
I. You have to be a ABLP member
2.The Government makes a big deal about housing development and uses it as a political weapon.
3. There is no Government legislation bring applied to how benefits such as housing is administered. If there is such a thing what the writer is complaining about is illegal and should be investigated.
UNLESS: It is mindless, immortal people like yourself, that keeps this country Antigua and Barbuda a morally bankrupt place, and while you get yours it doesn’t not make a difference.
Anything the Labour Party does the cronies will always take advantage they are a horrible bunch. I would bet my last dollar the administration doesn’t give a hoot about who says what. I ha e heard that people who do not support ALP have hello to any of these houses
Im am ABLP supporter amd I’ve applied numerous times on the online portal to nothing but an automated messge. N one has thr decency to reply and advise of the steps to take. I even went to their office building for information, gave my contact details and a year later still nothing.
@Living and Dying Like Dogs: Antigua have a huge payroll under the government..Over 14 thousand people are in the Government Payroll.. Most of this position are totally useless, but you and almost all Antigua approve this. You mention this: “People living abroad are able to purchase some of these houses when government workers are not”
This is a dumb comment considering that a Antigua working in UK, Canada, USA can make a significant more money in one year than any Government Worker here. You can’t have same salary than a worker on UK. BEcause your economy isn’t so big. Any Antigua just sweeping building in UK can get at least 2000 Pound in one Month. Many Antigua live for 4 month with their relatives and in just 4 month they come back with more of 15 Thousand EC dollars…You being a Government Worker never will have that capacity here. Instead Why you don’t try private sector over here? Why thousand of Antiguans have nice houses and have a good house over here? WHat skill they have that most of our Government Workers don’t have? Why this mentality of ” Government” need to give me this, this, but none want to shake up the laziness and push themself to learn some skill than make them put big money in their pocket? I see around lot of young Antiguans driving an old cars cleaning AC units and washing cars. They are not waiting for “Government” to put money in their pocket, they fight hard and to be better in that trade that allow shape their life better than most of government workers that prefer sit in some places doing nothing just waiting for the paycheck at the end of the month.
