For a country whose citizens profess to be ‘Christians’, and who claim that they were enslaved and stripped of their birthright and culture, the display is vulgar to the extreme.
Carnival is supposed to be synonymous with emancipation.

Writer, what do you expect. Carnival was never meant to be a Godly thing. Carnival is a devilish celebration so what do you expect. Some women behave as if they cant mash a fly but come carnival you can see their entire nakedness. They drink so much alcohol that they cant even control themselves and you see men going with them pretending to be their partners and when you think is their partners is rape they going to rape them. When they become sober they have no idea who get them pregnant. It’s a burning shame. As soon as carnival is over is the most pregnant women you see walking the street. What a shame. So how comes it’s an emancipation celebration. Why should a woman allow a man from no where to be winning on her front and buttocks and come the following day you playing holy. As I said before carnival celebrations in Antigua are people from the Devils parliament seeking to elect cabinet members. Sometime ago I saw a mass troup called Vitus Mass troupe. I understand that mass troupe belong to a church in Antigua. My question is why should a church put a mass troupe on the road and was told that they dress different. My question is what are you doing in a mass troupe with naked men and women all around you. Wake up children of beelzebub get a life

I am in agreement with the article in most parts. My friend had a barbecue business during T’shirt mass and she was saying some of the same things. She told us that several young girls had to be placed on the side and left unattended. Drunk to a state of comatose. She said she had to be covering them because their breast and Virginia was completely exposed. She used cardboard, paper towels what ever was available.
I once saw two young men lifted a drunk young girl and was headed to the botanical garden. I followed them and called out to them. I said she is not related to you, otherwise you would be taking her home instead. One answered mind you business. I said Ok I am calling the police. They just put her down and walked away. I called 911 and they came and collected her. Lots of the young women that are drunk to the point that they’ve don’t know themselves are below 20 years. Plenty below 18 and even school going.
I said if ever my daughter ever got involved in anything like this at any point in her life , I will do everything in my power to get my name off all documents. She will not be able to refer to me as her dad.
Do you think with this behavior we stop the increase in rape ? Sure you can remember that there was a report by a mother or grandmother recently that her daughter was walking home from school and a car with some guys stopped and tried to abduct her, within view of her friends that were walk a little distance behind. If that was true can you imagine what these guys are doing in times like there. They must be having a ball .
So who is responsible for this mess ? Where are our church leaders- to busy rocking up material wealth. Where is the Christian council and other such organizations. Even the doctor and the emergency services needs to come to the public Snd hold s conversation about this issue.

I agree with you writer, but I don’t believe people are going to change just like that. They are just blindly following their most recent ancestors. I don’t believe our ancient ancestors were quite so crude. The only way to change the culture and save the children from following that path is to deliberately create a new modern more decent culture. Begin by encouraging the regular production of cultural songs with clean, fun, uplifting lyrics – have singing contests, start a clean record label etc. There are lots of talented Christian and clean singers out there. Not every song needs to be about Jesus – just create good family friendly music with some of our traditional sounds. Then, begin some alternative Emancipation week traditions e.g. singing contests, plays, art shows, village activities etc. Hype them up and be consistent each year. More and more persons will patronise. Perhaps eventually the new traditions will take over. If not, then at least the kids will see that they have a choice of what to listen to and participate in. They are not culturally required to degrade themselves to honour the ancestors. Let us be the change we wish to see…

Look at the history of carnival (nothing to do with emancipation, that was an afterthought) — it comes from Egypt-to Rome-to Europe-to Trinidad via French settlers – and the name literally means Meat Goodbye (Carne Vale) in Latin. It refers to Lent when you have to stop eating meat (and give up other worldly pleasures)…Carnival was a pagan festival, adopted by Christians as a way to “Free-up” before Lent, when you have to be pious for 40 days.
In Antigua it was moved to the summer for economic/tourism-related reasons, but the idea of the carnival remains the same – a period to free up yourself without the judgement of the society (formerly the church). So you are completely wrong.
