Dear Editor,
I was recently browsing the internet and interestingly, I bounced on a FB page of one of the nation’s well known personality, who has aspired & has successfully graduated from medical school as a doctor.
Interestingly, after all the hard work, the sacrifices and the several years spent abroad, away from love ones, the young doctor who returned home, and was hoping to return gratitude to his country & family, is now making a plea as to why he cannot be accepted at the medical table. I presume, that the table, is the hospital.
Presently, frustration seems to be consuming him, and it appears as though his dreams & the promises that he made to his mother, who is now deceased, are beginning to shatter.
With his creative skills, the young doctor used poetry / spoken word, to scrpit a letter to his deceased mother, expressing to her the challenges he is presently facing to be a accepted into our health care system. This certainly brings back memories of the notable incident that took place in America with George Floyd, who allegedly received a ” knee in the neck ” to cause his death and upon the verge of dying, he cried out to his deceased mother for help.
Stories of this nature is nothing new. Several stories have surfaced in the past whereby other young doctors have experienced a similar plight of being offered no room in the medical inn, inspite of having their MD degree.
For some, not completing a medical license might be one of the setbacks. Other reasons might be a preference of absorbing foreign workers into the system or it might not taking on persons with personal health issues who cannot manage the stressful & robust long hours with very little sleep, of which the job requires. Of course, the list can go on & on.
Be that as it is, it is just not undestood as to why these young professionals cannot be accepted into the system as medical administrators or even junior doctors to be supervised.
It is extremely heart wrenching to hear & see our very own young sons & daughters of the soil, who are highly qualified and returning home to give back to their country & families, are not given the opportunity to do so.
Unfortunately, some of these young professionals are presently unemployed. Others have found themselves employed in establishments where their medical skills & qualifications have no bearings with the operations of the establishment they work for. They are just to make two ends meet.
Without a doubt, if these brilliant minds continue to be ignored , then (1) their medical skills & knowledge will dwindle from them and (2) they will be force to go other countries where they are welcome and hence will locally cause a brain drain.
Now, is this what an Economic Powerhouse is all about? Why are our young doctors being treated in this manner? Doesn’t charity begin at home? Where is that respect from the authorities that our brilliant minds duly deserve? Why is there no room at the table for them? If there is honey in this rock, why then can’t they enjoy some of it.?
The links below is the FB page of the young doctor’s plea.

I am in total agreement with this article. This Doctor is the most qualified, and skilled, in this unitary state.
Agreed! Young doctors are the backbone of our healthcare system.
This is what Browne has to focus on… Why do i have to come back to my country and struggle for a job when i have my degree… I not seeing the reason… We accept Spanish doctors, so why can’t we accept our own people? This is so disheartening.
If we cant treat our young doctors right now, What does the future hold for health care in Antigua?
This is sad
Because they are poor people children attaining such academic status as doctors, they are forced to work with broken equipment and lack of medicine because Gaston squander the nation finance as he is incompetent to manage, Lennox Weston would have run the ministry of finance a lot better by allowing the technicians to do their job and not be as abrasive as Gaston.
Are these students the same students that the gov’t boasts of when they graduate?
The author of this article hit the nail on the head …. Jobs should be provided to these students so they can give back towards the development of the country.
It is ludicrous to give away scholarships to students and upon their return there are no jobs.
THEY WILL BE LEFT TO SUFFER IN SILENCE.
Something is definitely wrong. The MOO needs an overhaul … A proper audit should be done needed!!
They rather get some doc from oversee that st some time don’t care about us.but to kill us. N Blame it on some other sickness …. give them the job u know they are qualified for..
These doctors watch too much TV. I’ve seen some at the hospital fresh out of university, stethoscope dangling around theneck, strutting the halls with a practiced air of superiority. Sure they would have looked around and seen palatial homes owned by persons being addressed as “Doctor”. They would, I am sure, tell you that it took years of hard work and dedication and a proven track record to attain their current status with all its trappings. Gone are the days when people will bow down and worship a newly minted Doctor just because…… Work hard, continue to learn, practice humility and you’ll be okay. Stop behaving like an entitled spoilt child!
Some person on here seem to have a gripe. Those freshly minted doctors did not become doctors overnight. They put in many grueling years iof studies. And for those coming out of Cuba, from some very stressful environments. So please. Those students sacrificed large chunks of their lives with the hope of returning home to serve.. And after being away from their families and loved ones they deserve to be back home. So why are they now having to look elsewhere for employment. Ridiculous.
The cars and homes will come. They deserve it. Almost certain that’s not foremost on their minds returning home.
Isn’t the Antiguan public entitled to doctors who are qualified? If someone is unable to pass liscencing exams that the entire region or world has to do to work in a region? Shouldn’t a young professional Antiguan or not be held to the same standard? We too often complain of the quality of service given at SLBMC, and i think it stems from not expecting more in terms of ethics and/ or qualifications from our health care professionals. I am assuming he has not been given a seat at the table, as he has not yet achieved the qualifications to deserve it.
Tell E.E Gwarn go siddung.
Where did he do his Medical rotations and what hospital did he do his residency? Doing a 6 year MD does not make you a Doctor. Come clean young man.
Do you all realize that most of the doctors who return to the Caribbean to practice did not pass the final exam that would have made them qualified to operate in the U.S. A Doctor explained that to me. There are a lot of them who after attaining their medical degree remain in the US where they receive a better pay and better opportunities. Don’t you think they are aware of that? Smh
