LETTER: Stop Signs Needed At All Intersections

10

Dear Editor,

There is no way drivers should be racing to intersections and boldly challenging those who actually have the right of way (in my head thinking wait right of way or breaking distance nah exist none mo?).

It is far too dangerous and frightening to be on the road like this. Even when you are waiting at an intersection, impatient drivers behind you are honking as if you must move before it is safe. The dangerous overtaking, bursting red traffic lights, is scary!!

We are pleading for immediate action and more policing on the roads, not just for accidents, but for consistent monitoring. Please, somebody, do subben!

Lives are at risk!!! We need help; it does not feel safe driving!! Please, please help us. All we want is to go back home safe.

A Frustrated Driver

  1. Dear letter writer, just a few days ago I thought of sending a letter myself, not a day I have not experienced this nonsense. A number of drivers come to a junction and the one who should stop even challenge you by driving his vehicle beyond where he should stop to force you from proceeding especially if his vehicle is bigger or even older than yours forcing you to stop, one of them actually said to me, if me no see me car likkle fu kip quiet

  2. I say that Transport Board and the police needs to be more forceful.

If you get into an accident and you are at fault, then a determination needs to be made to have your license suspended for a time and fines placed outside insurance claims.

Also any structures, lampposts, fences etc that you damage needs to be covered by you or your insurance.

I see these idiots driving all the time:

    Weed hanging out their mouths
    No seatbelts
    Side mirrors pulled in
    No headlights
Driving half hanging out the window
    Seat practically laying flat

    Idiots I tell you……

  3. So, do we think they don’t know they should stand up. Dem know, but dem nah k. I really do hope that when they are erected, they see them and don’t just still come out into the street. Not holding my breath though.

  4. And who will enforce the signs? If you are a regular road user, you must have realized that we no longer have traffic police. The only time they are seen is at a accident, escorting the GG & PM and funerals. What is really happening in this country? We allowed over 50,000 vehicles on roads built for 5,000. No plan for maintenance. No plan for expansion. No plan for DCA to prevent businesses being sited on main roads and busy junctions. No plan for anything. Just a free for all. As far as I am concerned cars should be banned from parking on any main road and that includes main roads through villages. And when there is road repairs for major roads, the detour roads must be fixed first. But why am I ranting? No one cares. We are a complaining population, not an action oriented one.

  5. What is the real purpose of the traffic department to report accidents collisions daily? How about monitor the streets to reduce these collisions. How can drivers violate traffic law everyday and not being held accountable. Is the traffic department satisfied by rolling up at accident scenes daily? How many more tragic accidents must occur? Time enough for us to be proactive and not reactive. Fix the symptoms of the issue!!!! Police Commissioner, Minister of Public Safety please act fast. It is too dangerous on the streets

  6. Absolutely agree. Road safety should come before convenience. A few signs are cheaper than hospital bills and funerals.

  7. I have never witnessed a driver being reckless while being pulled over caught in the act by traffic police, and every day, you can be sure that recklessness occurs. Not to bash the police, but if they themselves are always in a hurry with sirens on to beat every backed-up, congested traffic lane, when will the culprits get caught? Every day in Antigua, I have to ask for God’s mercies while driving. We all use the roads – our children, friends, and families. Why are we so quiet about this serious issue?

  8. The thing is where there’s a STOP sign people don’t STOP ,they run through it. STOP MEANS TO STOP , stand still look then proceed. A lot of drivers don’t respect the signs.

  9. I totally agree. Heck I’m too scared to drive in Antigua after witnessing the recklessness. Not only do drivers buss stop light but they over take going uphill with no clear line of sight. Subben could be coming over a hill and they still overtaking. They overtake three or more vehicles at a time at that and I wonder where’s the police? I say more police, more stop signs, and stiffer fines- heck even jail time. Maybe then these reckless miscreants will stop endangering our lives.
