Dear Editor,
There is a growing reality in St. Mary’s South that many residents are no longer whispering about, but saying plainly: representation cannot happen in absentia.
Kelvin Simon won a by-election. That is a fact. But elections are not the job. They are the interview. What follows is the work, and that is where the concern now lies.
Across Bolans, Urlings, Johnson’s Point, and the surrounding communities, the issues are not theoretical. Roads need attention. Drainage remains a concern. Community spaces require upkeep. Young people need direction. Families need support. These are not new problems, and they are not unique. What is becoming increasingly difficult to understand is the absence of a clear, consistent, visible effort from the person elected to represent them.
Instead, what St. Mary’s South appears to have is commentary without continuity. Visibility without grounding. Presence everywhere except where it matters most.
Being in Opposition is often used as a shield, but it is not a valid excuse. If anything, it is where leadership should be most visible. It is where initiative matters. It is where representatives prove whether they can lead without relying on government machinery.
And yet, even within the same Opposition, that excuse does not hold up.
Richard Lewis, operating under the same constraints, has demonstrated that it is entirely possible to remain engaged, vocal, and present in both national issues and constituency matters. The difference is not resources. The difference is approach.
So again, the question returns: why not St. Mary’s South?
What makes the situation even more striking is that some of the most consistent community engagement has not come from the sitting MP at all. Emanuel Peters, serving only in a caretaker capacity, has been visible, active, and responsive in ways that residents can see and point to. No title. No parliamentary seat. Just work.
That contrast is not political spin. It is lived experience within the constituency.
There is also a growing perception that priorities are misplaced. While constituents look for presence on the ground, what they see instead is a pattern of external visibility that does little to address local realities. Travel, appearances, and participation in events abroad may have their place, but they cannot replace the day-to-day responsibility of constituency representation.
An MP is not elected to orbit the role. An MP is elected to occupy it fully.
And then there is Parliament itself. Representation is not just about what happens in communities. It is also about what happens in the chamber. Advocacy, debate, presence, and accountability all matter. When constituents begin to question whether their representative is showing up with the consistency expected, that is not a minor issue. That is the core of the role.
At this point, the concern in St. Mary’s South is no longer about potential. It is about performance.
Because the truth is simple: people know when they are being represented, and they know when they are not.
They know when issues are followed up.
They know when someone is present.
They know when leadership is active versus when it is reactive.
And increasingly, the sentiment is shifting toward a single conclusion, that the constituency deserves more than commentary, more than sporadic visibility, and more than symbolic representation.
It deserves leadership that is grounded, consistent, and accountable.
Because in the end, the standard is not complicated. If the people have to ask where their MP is, then something is already wrong.
St. Mary’s South cannot be represented from a distance. It requires presence. It requires work. And right now, too many residents are still waiting to see it.

Concerned Citizen (I suspect Gaston) what you posted is quite valid. Buy Shugy will do what he always does and that is win because he is not a deceiver like Dwayne. In the South we can’t stand traitors nor Liars even though Dwayne has Gov’t funds to play with
Is like this writer dip in everything.
Oh for goodness sake! When will these ABLP propaganda hit pieces ever cease?
At least the Honourable Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon won his by-election fair and square, despite the ever spiteful Prime Minister Browne trying to discredit him and muddy the waters before, during and after.
If the writer wants to wail and bawl, why doesn’t he highlight the despicable behaviour and desertion by Anthony Smith’s in the All Saints West by-election he won decisively under the UPP banner, and then deserted to the ABLP, helped by the ever deceptive guile of a snake Browne.
Up till now the constituents of ASW are speculating as to why Smith behaved like this towards them and disrespected their faith in him?
I cannot think of a bigger political let down.
Now @Concerned Citizen, why don’t you write about this bigger story?
Didn’t think so, you ABLP propagandist…
Desperation!!!!
Desperation!!!!!!
Desperation!!!!!!!!
The laboRATs are really feeling the pressure.
They seem to be the ones looking the job and not the ones in office.
Who is this person afraid of?
If you are so certain about your opinion why are you hiding behind anonymity?
It is obvious that the agents of labour are working extra time and trying to devise a way to gain an advantage.
I have news for them.
Labour is not wanted in the south of the island.
Dwayne George is not wanted.
You may hide behind anonymity from now until elections.
That will not change the outcome in St Marys South.
So when you speak of Shuggy being absent tell us how much time the prime minister has spent on island in the last year.
What do we have to show for his absentia?
Nothing.
I have never seen anyone throwing stones at a mango tree that isnt loaded with ripe mangoes.
Obviously they underestimated the support for Shuggy.
Gaston is now doubtful that he made the right decision.
Labour is trembling.
The misrepresentation of the UPP by the ALP that UPP is devided is not working.
Fear is gripping them.
LaboRATs, take my advice.
You are fighting a losing battle.
You cannot unseat Shuggy.
The UPP is growing stronger and stronger with every passing day.
The rescue and governance of Antigua is at their fingertips.
Your attempts to discredit the UPP is not working.
Down with Labour!!!!!
Up with the UPP. Shuggy are the real thing
St Marys South says so.
Vote shugg
Why is it that some still thinks that when people come to this platform and write what’s on their hearts, it’s Gaston Browne that is writing it. It’s a slap in the face to that individual that you think their concern is not genuine, just because the narrative is against your party. The writer did not lie on Shugy, but y’all still of the opinion that he’s out there doing work. He ain’t doing shit and y’all know it, but remain delusional to the fact. Sad set a people.
SHUGY does NOTHING for His constituency. SHUGY is a COMPLAINER. He goes on MR.Knight show and COMPLAIN. COMPLAIN. Never had a solution.
SHUGY, where is the $30,000,000 you promised to invest in St.Mary’s South.
You are a DAMN LIAR. Never had anything to say in Parliament. Big waste of time.
SHUGY …where is the boat you bought in Miami ?
Remember what your good Friend DAINTY about you on J TRUTH show.
We shall expose your ARSE this GENERAL ELECTION.
WASTE OF TIME SHUGY .
