Dear Editor
As a regular listener of the Talking Point show, hosted by the esteem Senator Colin Browne, I went onto yesterday’s Point FM Facebook page, to tune into his informative talk show.
Unfortunately, Senator Colin was not air.
Immediately, I felt disappointed, however, because of my addiction to the program, I stayed on the FB page & realized that the Youth Parliament was showing.
Surprisingly, the cliché ” within every dissappointment, there is a blessing ” took the best of me, because I had no regrets watching the Youth Parliament. It was a blessing in disguise.
I was extremely impressed with each speaker’s presentation. They all articulated with confidence, eloquency, clarity & fluency.
It was pellucid that the subject ” Urgent reform of mental health treatment ” was well researched & delivered. Both teams, The opposition & propositon did a great job.
Unlike what was seen in the Youth Parliament, the nation is yet to hear or see a dynamic debate in the Lower House of parliament.
The opposition paliamentarians seems to be weak and are yet to rise to the occassion.
Be that as it is, it would be lovely see the youngsters have an unofficial debate against the senior ABLP parliamentarians in parliament. The topic ” Why should marijuana be decriminalized…? The Govt can propose and the youths oppose.
I am sure the debate will boosts the youngsters’ confidence & self esteem.
I will definitely bet on the youngsters. From my vantage point, the youths have showed great potential.
They have great debating skills & it is evident that they have displayed a considerable degree of national pride. Keep it up guys, continue to do the great works!
Alex

A senseless debate. Elected politicians have to be realistic and pragmatic. An opposition or youth debaters can say anything.
A government has to make hard decisions on how limited resources are spent. 15,000 public servants because there are not enough jobs in the private sector and politicians looking votes. But a governemt will tell you, it has no choice as people have to live. So the money in the Treasury is spread around. If we had the 3,000 that was really needed, we could pay the teachers, police and nurses properly. Will a government politician say that.
Nice…… A debate between the youth parliamentarians and the government would be an exciting opportunity to hear fresh perspectives and ideas on pressing national issues.
I hope the debate focuses on solutions, not just the differences between generations.”
I think the debate should also allow for meaningful input from both sides. This would foster more collaboration rather than just competition.
The young parliamentarians are always impressive.
As the author suggested, the youthful parliamentarians should be given an opportunity to debate the govt parliamentarians and the opposition parliamentarians.
Most likely those youth parliamentarians will go on to other things and not go into politics though. Politics can be a risky career. Many people could put on a good show in Parliament but choose other things to do. We should be grateful that some persons are willing to get into politics to try to make a difference even if their debating skills are not always the best in the world.
