As a concerned citizen of Antigua, I feel compelled to speak on an issue that has become very troubling — the use of ski masks in public spaces and its connection to the rise in criminal acts.

Lately, there has been an increase in individuals wearing ski masks during the day, particularly in situations where such attire seems unnecessary or out of place.

While I understand that ski masks are sometimes worn by construction workers and landscapers for skin protection, its growing use on an everyday basis raises concerns when it comes to public safety.

The big concern is that ski masks provide a convenient way to conceal one’s identity, offering a get away for those engaging in robberies and other violent and unlawful acts.

In a society that is crying for safety and proper security, it is deeply troubling that a simple accessory can be used to obscure someone’s identity, making it more difficult for both law enforcement and citizens to identify potential threats.

It is crucial that we, as a nation, take steps to protect the well-being of everyone.

While individuals have the right to choose their attire, we must also recognize the risks associated with the misuse of clothing like ski masks.

Banning ski masks could be a significant step in reducing this risk. By eliminating the opportunity for criminals to hide behind these masks, we can contribute to making our communities safer and more secure.

I urge the government and law enforcement to take this issue seriously and consider implementing a ban on ski masks.

This measure would help maintain the integrity of our society and ensure that all citizens feel safe in their communities. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Concerned,
Antigua Surf

  1. Your call is timely.
Sadly the law enforcer are part of the problem..
Imagine men posing as police officers coming your home to effect a search and all are masked.
You cannot identify any except by the size of the belly.
No matter how they may infringe in your rights you cannot identify any to lodge a complaint.
Call on your police commissioner to look into that.

  2. I wear a ski mask, for health reasons. So it can not need out of place, when being used for appropriate reasons.

But I do understand with the rise in crimes how seeing someone in such a mask could make people feel.

Maybe if you are wearing it in public you must have an id hang around your neck or a particular issued bracelet from law enforcement.

You can wear a ski mask, as it is not the ski mask that determines suspicions but the actions of that person. I will even allowed suspicion to be the ski-mask and the actions together and not just a ski-mask. It is like telling someone not to wear the pandemic mask, as both covers the mouth, nose and lower face. Even at that moment wearers have caps or hats on. Which operates exactly as a ski-mask.

Let us focus on actions and not just the surface. But I also understand how these times have caused you to be worried and rightful putting attention on things that can be a bit scary and somewhat new to the community.

I respect you bringing this up.

  3. Antigua Surf,
Let’s be clear, construction workers do not wear ski masks in hot weather. Neither in Texas when it gets to 110 degrees or in Florida when it’s 95 degrees.
Protection is justified when in is working in an are with sand flies. And should not be worn off the job

  4. Stone you are right on point. Thugs wanna be who they wanna be and will use what they wanna use. I believe the issue has to do with the inner man. There must be work on the inner person. Laws and bans will not be enought.

  5. Baning ski mask and even hoodies is one idea.no problem with that. So they gonna use tee shirts and kerchiefs or some other garment that can’t be banned..we need to go deeper into the problem which is how to prevent these crimes from happening on such a regular basis in the first place

  6. Thank you very much AntiguaNewsroom for acknowledging and publishing my letter of concern. I hope the government of Antigua and Barbuda do ackowledge this as well. This is a very touching matter and we can’t go on living like this. Yes I understand the different reasons for people wearing these things but the concern reach where it is also used for criminal acts. It’s time the line is drawn. Thanks once again AntiguaNewsroom

  7. I think the problem is more about enforcement. Banning ski masks sounds good, but what about making sure police can enforce the rule effectively?

  8. I completely agree with Antigua Surf on this letter. Ski masks are often used to hide behind criminal activities, creating difficulties in for the law enforcement to capture these criminals. and it’s becoming a serious concern. It’s time the government take action towards this.

  9. @my way in whatsoever….you are a psico or a smart beign to sought for self indulgence after some beigns AS ME..read for curiosity your statements.
