Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my concern about a pressing issue that has increasingly affected our community: the reckless speed at which many young men drive on our roads.
Weekly, we see these senseless accidents occurring on the roads in Antigua and Barbuda, and most often than not, a young man is at the wheel, under the wheel, or at worst, stuck between the wheels.
This is not a laughing matter. This is serious.
Too many young, productive lives are being taken away from us because of these poor judgments.
I don’t know if the thrill of going fast to end up nowhere keeps these young men constantly making poor judgments.
Many of these youngsters seek to get a fast car before they buy land. They acquire loans to buy cars before even having a proper roof over their heads. You wonder where they are.
Honestly, this dangerous behavior not only puts their lives at risk but also endangers the lives of others—pedestrians, cyclists, and fellow drivers alike.
What drives our young men to drive so fast on the road? Is it a desire for thrill, peer pressure, or perhaps a misguided sense of invincibility?
Whatever the reason, it is clear that urgent action is needed to address this issue, as the consequences can be devastating.
We must engage in open dialogue with our youth, encouraging them to reflect on the dangers of speeding and the impact it can have on their future and the lives of those around them.
I believe that education and awareness campaigns in schools and communities can play a pivotal role in changing these driving habits
Additionally, we should consider implementing more stringent traffic regulations, coupled with increased enforcement, to deter reckless driving.
Community outreach programs involving parents, educators, and law enforcement could also foster a collective responsibility for safe driving practices.
In the end, we all want our streets to be safer for everyone. By addressing this issue together, we can help our young men make better choices behind the wheel.
Ashton Casimir

There friends will blame it on the road rather than the reckless way they drive. Some of them need to just die in these accidents because they are endangering others.
I dont wish death on people but if they want to act the fool, do not put innocent life’s at risk! Far to often I have to hussle off the road because some dick head thinks hes on a racing track
Most of them are not good drivers but convince themselves they are just because they can press down hard on the excellarator and want to impress the young ladies who for the most part do not give to hoots about them, I have seen them entering a curve wrong at high speeds and once you enter the curve wrong you will always come out wrong
More woman for me. Wah u worry bout
Picture this, as this is how I see them most days……..
1) Driving without seat belts
2) On their phones
3) Whole arms hanging out the driver’s side windows
4) Side mirrors turned inwards
5) A joint hanging out their mouths
Young people are DOOMED!!
Truer words never speak! Too much fast driving on these small roads, like dem playing Fast & Furious.
What is there to stop them?? No police presence, no need to adhere to rules. Nobody gets a ticket for speeding around here or breaking the road laws. It’s a free for all…
Sorry but some of these youth feel invincible till reality slap dem inna di face. RIP nah bring back life.
If police was really doing speed checks and enforcing DUI laws, half of this wouldn’t be happening.
Me son crash last year. Still alive but crippled. Dis letter bring back all di pain. Teach dem early!
No problem My Brother.
We now have space to put them to rest.
They can get into accidents right next to the cemetery on Factory Riad.
We just put them to continue sleeping tight there.

Police presence on road at nights for speeding rather than staying in the station on their cell phones, liming in the police vehicles, and park at woman yard.
Many drivers in Antigua do not respect the driving Laws. They would cut you off without reason. They would overtake multiple cars at a time on the Highways. They do not obey Stop Signs at all.I do believed, more Police Traffic on the roads would be a plus.
Pompey just keep taking up valuable column inches with his all caps contribution. Just ban him
Driving to their graves indeed. I like that this person said in this letter.
In agreement with this letter. Sometimes all I feel is wind. When I look it was a vitz passing my way. Fellas it makes no sense. Let’s consider our lives and the lives of those who we don’t even know
The irony of the situation is the families who are left behind to carry these burdens. The transport board should stop issuing liscene to young men under 27. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind
@ Critical thinker.
Who/what is there to stop them? JAIL and DEATH!!!
If those are not deterrents, then I don’t know what the hell are!
It’s bad enough that you kill yourself, but what happens if you injure or worse, kill someone? Sorry can’t cut it!!!
This will not change. There is no longer a functioning Traffic Department. Police are only seen at the scenes of accidents or escorting the GG, PM or funerals. Even if legislation is made harsher, it will only apply to some and not to all.
The essence of the problem is a government with no macro development plan. None. We now have more vehicles than roads and everyone is in a hurry.
We let in 55,000 vehicles on roads built for maybe 35% of that. No road expansion. The serious accidents will soon become a way of life and we won’t even notice.

The adrenaline rush and hype excites the pathways of the brain especially in young people and this comes from observation and the administration of speed and fast shiny sports cars that’s a fact also video games that depict speed and racing also excites and releases dopamine the good feeling hormone and serotonin so it’s a chemistry release that is naturally a good exciting feeling this brings me to the fact of reckless driving from our youth the loose control because of the excitement that they have no control over its like an orgasm so traffic laws would not help because young people admire extreme driving slow means driving fast their brains are wired differently until after the age of twenty five so enablers at the speed tracks could say they love being there to observe speed that’s their addiction that’s their air of survival
