LETTER: Rasta man impressed by youth parliamentarians

2

As a Rasta man, I am not usually one to follow politics or the news, but I had the opportunity to listen to Parliament’s Youth on Pointe FM, and I must say I was thoroughly impressed. The discussions were insightful, particularly their focus on mental health, a topic that is highly relevant in Antigua and Barbuda today.

Both sides presented logical and realistic recommendations, demonstrating a deep understanding of the issue. One young speaker highlighted the challenges faced by hotel workers when dealing with demanding guests. They proposed that hotels should have a mental health practitioner to provide support for employees. This recommendation stood out to me because it acknowledges the high stress nature of the hospitality industry and the need to prioritize mental wellbeing.

With the government currently discussing the establishment of a new union, I believe this is an important factor to consider. Mental health should not be overlooked, especially in industries where employees face constant pressure and emotional strain. Perhaps this is the right time to advocate for mental health support in workplace policies to ensure a healthier and more productive workforce.

  1. Glad the youth are doing well. If people treated one another well there would be no need for all the mental health hoopla. Getting a break from a toxic environment, communing with nature etc.have been proven to help persons reduce stress levels. So, an alternative solution would be to ensure enough breaks, retreats etc. for staff. If the industry is that toxic then perhaps have lots of opportunities to progress to other areas could also help so workers are not stuck in a role they don’t like for years.

  2. Exercise has also been proven to decrease stress levels. So, perhaps providing employee amenities such as gym, walking gardens, etc. might be useful. Also, a staff member could be employed whose job it is to organize fun activities for workers, maybe between shifts, at lunchtime etc. or just little games they can play in passing to help lift the mood.
