Dear Mr. Michael Joseph,

As the Junior health minister, who is an extremely responsible & proactive person, I chose to address you rather than addressing the minister of health, who I think seems to be more focused on the estetiques of the hospital rather than the baisc operations.

It is always advocated that a healthy nation is always a wealthy nation.

Therefore, as an Antiguan who wants to see the best for my country, I think it is only appropriate to ask you the following questions because from my vantage point, it seems to me that our healthcare system is falling apart….

1.Why are so many clinics close in Antigua

2. Why can’t our junior doctors who are seeking employment be utilized as medical administrators at the clinics ?

3. What added value has the new waiting room done to the turnaround time to see a doctor in the ER dept at SLBMC ?

4. Why is the hospital short staff with doctors when some medical students are unemployed? If the payroll is saturated, can’t they be voluntarily enrolled to assist with the manpower and given a stipend and at the same time allow them to get hands on practice?

5. Why are incidents concerning doctors’ irresponsible practice been swept under the table?

6. Why is there a shortage of linen such as bed sheets & pillows within the wards?

7. Why do doctors have to work 24 hr shifts?

8. Why are so many nurses & doctors getting frustrated with our health care system and migrating overseas to find better a working environment?

9. Why isn’t there a proper accountability system where patients can file reports of the poor treatment they have received from the medics?

10. Why isn’t a system in place for patients who have a crisis condition such asthma, sickle cell, gastrointestinal and cardiac, not be given an ID card, so upon arrival at the ER dept these patients can be clearly identified to get immediate attention?

11. Why aren’t doctors summoned to a tribunal when they are found to be irresponsible during their practice?

12. What are the responsibities of our new medical director?

Alex

  1. Wow, these are some very pertinent questions…… It will be nice to see what the answers are for these questions. Enquiring minds always want to know

  2. Great questions but very unfair to post them to the Junior Minister. The current Minister is a control freak and his Junior will have very little to do and will be exposed to nothing important. These questions should be asked of PM Browne on Saturday on his Pointe FM programme or by one of our useless UPP MPs in Parliament.

  3. Why is colposcopy results taking so long. The Government made it free for women but some specimen was sent to be analyzed since last year and there is no result. SAVE OUR WOMEN PLEASE. Thanks.

  4. Editor,

I’m surprised you have not published any articles regarding the allegations against a certain UPP candidate. The mother has detailed alleged abuse suffered by her child at the hands of his father (the UPP candidate). I guess another news outlet will beat you to it. But stay tuned. Pringle will certainly have to recall this “rogue” candidate faster than you can say “attem”pted assassination

  5. Writer, who are you trying to fool?

Who really believes doctors are working 24 hour shifts without complaint?

“So many clinics are closed” yet you can’t bring any specifics? Not surprised.

“Shortage of bed sheets and linens”, and no one is complaining on public media? Really?

Who really believes that “incidents concerning doctors’ irresponsible practice been swept under the table”, when we have not heard loud complaints made by the alleged victims in any forum?

The writer just sat down today and decided “what salacious questions can I pose so the readers accept their premises as fact?”

We have had letters in the past the appeared to come from actual firsthand knowledge of what the writer was saying. This one is clearly just s*** stirring.

If even 10% of these questions came from reality we would never hear the end of it from citizens, the nurses union etc.

Healthcare should be continually improved, however blatant propaganda adds nothing to that mission. We can all welcome the customer service training, new dialysis capacity and all other reasonable interventions. Where real problems exist, point them out. Where progress is made, be honest about it – like ER waiting times, for example. Complaints about that have been on a continual decline in recent times.

    Make proactive recommendations, not mischief.

  6. @Lady Bee I think we all understand how politics can be in our lovely little twinisland state.

One clinic was only recently refurbished with another to open, yet this writer is alleging that there are mass clinic closures, which is simply untrue. In fact the only closure of note is Five Islands and that will be shortly addressed by…

Funding secured under GEF will rebuild certain old clinics to Category-5 standard. When that occurs there will almost certainly be no comment welcoming or acknowledging that from the usual political writers.

In the writer’s mind we did not receive two new polyclinics (Villa and Glanvilles)

In the writer’s mind there was no massive expansion of dialysis capacity and there is no Cardiac Centre under construction. And forget about the new mental health facility to upgrade the standard of care which is lacking at Clarvue.

How can any reasonable person claim the ministry of health is not proactive? Can they improve? Certainly. What on earth could not benefit from improvement? Trying to paint dark visions which are completely out of touch with reality cannot be motivated by any genuine desire for continuous improvement.

If the writer means well he or she should speak to factual issues and make proactive recommendations.

The fact that many of these questions are obviously baseless makes the entire letter – including whatever few reasonable questions – seem farcical and politically motivated.

  7. How strange it is when persons become defensive because of their political allegiance to the ruling party but extend their voice for help only when the situation or dilemma reaches to their door step at home…..

    Hypocrisy to highest degree!

Let us not forget the ” famous political faithful ” with his love one at SLBMC some months ago.

  8. Hey this is pure political campaigning, where ALP writes a letter to an aspiring ALP politician to give him prominence, oops! I forget we the public is not that smart.
