Dear Honorable Minister

Urgent Request for Intervention and Inspection of Public Buses at West Bus Station

I am writing to express the increasing concerns of commuters, myself included, regarding the deplorable conditions of public buses departing from West Bus Station. As someone who relies on public transportation as my primary means of travel, I am deeply troubled by the health and safety risks that these buses pose to the public.

The state of the buses that operate on routes such as Bendals Road leaves much to be desired. Many buses are visibly unsanitary, with mold and grime covering surfaces due to infrequent or non-existent cleaning practices. Furthermore, numerous seats are in poor condition, often ripped or on the verge of falling apart, and it is evident that upkeep standards are severely lacking.

These issues indicate not only a disregard for the well-being of passengers but also a potential violation of the transportation regulations governing Antigua and Barbuda. This experience has, unfortunately, become a “horror story” for myself and other passengers who rely on these buses daily.

I respectfully urge your office to conduct thorough inspections of these public buses and to enforce compliance with safety and hygiene regulations. Doing so will help ensure that commuters are provided with safe and clean transportation, as is their right.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I am hopeful that necessary actions will be taken to improve the quality of public transportation services in our nation.

  1. Transport Board need to look into this. Who see to it that STANDARDS are met and kept?

Also, something needs to be done, as per putting on more buses on certain routes at East Bus Station, for workers who can’t get home after 6:30pm.

Come on. Give people bus-route and ignore the selfish bus-operators.

  2. Some.of the Government transportation and Buildings are in the same condition. I hope they clean out their eyes the same time they fix this serious problem. I have coworkers that got sick from mould in Government buildings

  3. Public transportation yes. However, I believe that these buses are privately owned. A lot of them are in a deplorable state and could be a health hazard. Besides the Transport Board applying the rules, the system of public transport should be examined including the pricing of the routes. Many of these bus owners appear to be senior folks seeking out a living. This issue is more complicated than just the Transport Board applying the rules.

  4. what about the 3 BUSES REGISTERED IN UPP POLITICIANS NAMES? Those have in mold too?

    1). Jackie Quinn
    2). Harold Lovell
3). Wilmoth Daniel (STRIPPER POLE installed)

Buses donated to Antigua to bolster our school bus fleet, kept by 3 #WickedSunshineGovernment MPs

Any MOLD and health hazard there?

  5. This is not a ridicule to the system but simple observations and enforcement for the betterment of Public Service Operations. It is a serious problem we have in ANU and BA and that is maintenance and checks and balances. Public service vehicles and their Operators should have certain standards. After all they’re are a reflection of our fragile tourism product. The writer spoke of mold and the ripped seats but the FUNK that permeates from some of these vehicles, leaves to question if the Operators are nose blind. Two, the DEPORTMENT of some of the Operators are left to be desired. Three, some of these Public Service vehicles are operating with broken or faulty indicator, tail and headlamps and some short of lugnuts on their wheels. It leaves to question as to what level of “INSPECTION” if any, does “SOME” not all, of these Public Service Vehicles undergo? And to add gas to the fire; Where are our SCHEDULED STOPS? Operators would haphazardly stop anywhere at a whim or passengers request without signaling granted that there are limited shoulders to pull off but most often impedes the continual flow of traffic! It also leaves to question, where are the Police to combat the disregard for our traffic laws? And don’t talk how some Operators operate in reckless abandon when driving some of these vehicles. It is like fast and furious! Especially after school. These PROBLEMS needs to be addressed for a smooth Public Service Operations.

Just my observations from a kink I’m the SYSTEM. Sad to what is being offered to the Publc now.

  6. My concern with the bus system is the lack of routes at certain times or on certain days in certain locations. This limits where people who rely on the bus can live making commuting inconvenient for them depending on where they need to go. The bus drivers naturally want full buses so they do not run in certain locations or on certain days. One fix might be to mandate that each bus does a loop through a busy route and then through a quiet route. So, all areas of the island can be served. Or, perhaps there should be government buses once per hour or so on quiet routes. Buses can also run on days like Sundays at least for a couple of hours in the morning and then the evening so persons can go out and then get back home.
