Antigua Girls’ High School, Newgate Street, Antigua.

To the Principal of AGHS,

This letter serves as a statement to highlight the poor performance among the educators at the prestigious Antigua Girls High School.

As a principal, I recognise that you have a tough and demanding job and are passionate about helping your students succeed.

However, I am a concerned parent for one of the students attending your institution.

Firstly, I would like to commend the hard-working teachers who have taken the time to organize their subject curriculum and ensured that grades for their specific areas are entered into the system within a timely manner.

Job well done. With that being said, I do not wish to degrade your performance as a manager but rather express my concerns about the practices of your educators in aspects of, loosing student’s assignments, then assigning a zero percent grade.

Is it that parents should now request teachers to sign a slip to say that they received their children assignment.

Another aspect is the grading of assignment without any form of rubric to show marking criteria and giving assignment with word-of-mouth instructions on how the procedure should be done.

I don’t know about the other parents but even at a university level clear instructions should be given and I would appreciate going forward that measures are put in place to mitigate these errors.

I have spoken to you “the principal” on several occasions about my concerns and was assured that these issues will be addressed. Yet since our conversations the practice remains the same.

According to Gallup research employees are four times likely to perform better, when feedback is received about their performance daily rather than annually.

This therefore shows that feedback is a critical part of employee improvement.

Secondly, I cannot end before addressing a specific Agriculture teacher from the lower grades department.

Please take a break over this midterm to reevaluate your performance and your organisational skills. It should not be too difficult to recognize your short comings. To the principal, as the song rightfully states when the top slack the middle and bottom cant tight.

There is much more that can be said but as I stated this letter is only to highlight poor practices at the Antigua Girls High School, with an intent for them to do better.

    • … of all said in the letter ALL you find to highlight is “loosing students assignments” as though it isnt common for people to misspell words like loose for lose or whether for weather and countless more. Yall really shallow round here boss 🙄

Teachers can sometimes be either irresponsible, overwhelmed or just plain absentminded because even in private schools missplacing assignmwnts occur and they QUICK asf to apply a big fat zero. Maybe they need a more organized system even creating it personally in excel or such where u log assignments issued/received alongside dates and occurences of times when you had to ask the tardy student for said assignment as a backup/recordkeeping exercise. But our government schooling system needs serious URGENT attention.

  1. I stand in total agreement with you Parent because my child is also a victim of this outrageous act by some of the teachers in AGHS. Just yesterday the same matter was brought to my attention where my child told me her assignment that was handed in could not be accounted for by the teacher. It’s not the first instance either and I told her I am at my breaking Point with this nonsense. Something must give!

ME TOTALLY FED UP TOO!!! MRS CROFT! FIX IT PLEASE! OR MINISTRY OF EDUCATION NEED TO FIRE AND HIRE!

    • This thing where teachers are saying they cant find the work that is being done or even saying they did not see the work that was sent online when i as a parent saw that the work was sent just to receive a zero at the end of the term is a no no for me. I am also a victim of such practices at the aghs

  2. My daughter is in 4th form and the school year is getting closer to the end and there has not been a geography teacher as yet for the whole school year

  3. YES!!! Students aren’t even being handed back their assignments. They’re supposed to just be contented with a grade without seeing where they fell short and what they can do to improve

  4. I too have had ongoing issues of teachers loosing my daughters assisgnments or not marking them and assisgned a zero. One teacher recently gave her back an sba she had from since my child was in 4th form. CXC right round the corner.

  5. What does Pearl Quinn have to do with AGHS issues🙄🙄 even though she was a past student…utter nonsense…anyho Principal get it together touch base with the alumnus to see what we can do and speak to the Minister that is HIS JOB to help the institution…lets get cracking on this and as our Motto says HONEY IS SWEET AND SO IS LEARNING👊👊…

  6. That school is a facade!is not managing the school competently. The teachers there are allowed to do anything….they attend classes when they choose etc. That place needs an overhaul.

  7. I am a guardian of a student attending the school she is a victim of these same situations concerning losing the assignments after handing it in.The teachers don’t communicate with the students about their mistakes or what they need to do to improve on their performance.

  8. My child is in 5th form and will go to teachers asking if they received her assignment. The teacher(s) will say I haven’t gotten to yours yet. Then at the middle or end of the term her report card says did not submit all assignments with no attempt from the teacher to even communicate in the next class that it was not located. The laziness is ridiculous. All it would have taken is a mesaage or call to say I have not located the assignment and a simple click of a mouse to resubmit the assignment but even that is too much work for them. I honestly was coming down hard on my child not knowing that it is a regular practice for them.

  9. I must say that in some instances, a teacher may misplaced a student assignment which should not be the case, but there are students who lie that they handed in assignments when they did not. A rubric should be given to students for SBA and presentation but an assignment does not warrant a rubric. Instead, the mark of each problem should be outline. So it’s a collaborative effort between parents, teachers and the students.

  10. Just a though, or two…

A…take snapshots with cellphone(everybody has the latest models), and email them to yourself(student) or to parent!

B…emailing the assignment to the teacher can also help if such a system is in place.

    B…email the assignment is s

  11. I am so happy my daughter did not attend that sham of high school. There is a lot of horrible things happening in that school and they are swept under the rug. The school that all parents fighting to send their girls. What a shameful thing. There are Secondary schools in Antigua and Barbuda that perform way better than AGHS. The teachers don’t give a shit about the students, they don’t have any kind of relationship with the students, they are not kind people. Children are always complaining about the teachers attitude towards them. Something is seriously wrong at that school and they are keeping it quite.

  12. My Granddaughter is third generation AGHS student. Funny, I thought she was exaggerating when she said that that particular teacher was doing nonsense! Just recently a test (exam-like) in administration was given and given the weight of a mid-term grade. Not One topic reflected on the paper was taught! They protested, but was laughed to scorn! Something has to give! As teachers, integrity and efficiency should be the hallmark of the profession! Teachers teach every other profession!

  13. I was so surprised at the way AGHS is after my daughter was sent there. I am not sure if the this is the way it has always been or the standards have dropped over the years but AGHS needs help. When my daughter was in first form they did not have a math teacher for the entire school year. Another class did not have a Spanish teacher either. In 2nd form she finally got a math teacher that instead of doing her work(teaching) she would throw insults at the students for saying they did not understand. Such as how you got into AGHS, oh shut up and go ask another student to help you because I am not going over this. Now my daughter is in 3rd form and so far no complaints. But I said all this to say that to be deemed the “top high school” the performance of some teachers are lacking. Enough is not being done to assist the students. Or is it because they are “the top” performers that they are left to fend for themselves thinking that they will figure them out themselves. The ministry needs to their work and keep a check on what is going on in our schools. The principals need to do their work and keep the ministry informed as to their hardships at their schools. Our so called top girls school is not up to par. I expected better. I am just happy that my daughter is a driven and ambitious young lady . She has been working hard and maintaining her grades each term. I can’t wait for her to get out of that corrupt institution with teachers who show no love for what they are being paid to do.

  14. It really shouldnt be a problem if the teacher loses online work, there ofc will be issues nth is perfect…it has happened to even me before… If the work is done online say maybe Google Docs or even Word, then said document should have been saved already, meaning if the work is said to be missing or not submitted then simple resubmit it. Its not going to even take you 3minutes to do so. Open GoogleDocs/Word, download the file, open GC , open the assignment and add it to it and submit. No stress needed. But ofcourse this would be different for other sites such as Kami which i doubt they use, and for edpuzzles which this issue shouldnt be able to arise due to the fact when your done it will show ur done and due to its mere complexities this issue wont occur, then unto Quizziz.com (not sure if this is how its rlly spelt but itd somewhat that) Errors may occur like this but at the end of the day the child would have seen all correct answers so even if this problem arises, 1 they should do it over an get a way better score, 2 do it infront their teacher and explain so.

  15. Thank God my daughter is out of that school. She went through hells with various teachers from first to fifth form. She was never a trouble maker or gave teachers attitude. Her assignments were always handed in on time, yet some teachers could not find the assignments. NONSENSE! Once or twice, I would let pass but not every term and several times too.
My daughter pulled through because God had and still has her back. Some of these teachers need to be screened , observed ansd assessed very often. I do not encourage girls to attend this school. I tell them other schools are important too so choose any one and do your best. AGHS is not what it used to be. There is a lot of crap that happens there and some of these teachers know how to try to look good when parents approach them about matters and dem very lie too.
The Principal has to be blamed for some of these issues!
Kudos to those teachers who are doing the right things.

  16. These statements are so true. My daughter is currently in AGHS and they forgot to put a subject on her report card which leaded her to get honor roll when she should of gotten principals list. They are currently looking through it and I want to see what these teachers say.
