LETTER: No animal feed – no food security

0

There has been ongoing issues with sourcing animal feed in Antigua for years and 2026 is off to a bad start for farmers. It is said that the boat from Jamaica did not come here for one week, why I don’t know.

This meant the feed shops ran out of food. I was not able to feed my egg laying chickens last week and that is my main source of income for my family.

If a boat does not come for one week and we have these issues what will happen if we have a hurricane or other disasters? We as a country need to address this urgently.

I already gave up my sheep and goats because when Abbot farm shop close down I could not get source wormers for my animals and things became hard.

The poultry association took over the feed selling from Abbott and it has gone down hill more and more. Do they have food for their chickens while small farmers like me have to watch their birds go hungry?

We are in a big problem with feed in animal agriculture in this country and it’s time to stop pretending all is well.
