Dear editor,
We’ve all seen the videos. Security cameras just dormantly capturing footage of a person committing a crime.
People stealthily breaking into people’s homes in broad daylight.
Some time ago, there was a video of multiple men in and out of a person’s bedroom.
Imagine if someone came home during that time.
More recently, a man pushed down the door of an apartment unit.
As a person who lives alone, I could only imagine the terror and helplessness that I’d feel if someone is breaking down my door, knowing I won’t be able to get help before my life and property are in danger.
Can someone suggest what defense a single woman would have as a man breaks into her home? She should get close to him with a knife and hope for the best?
Should law- abiding citizens be forced to bargain with criminals who trespass onto their property?
Hope that a person who clearly has no regard for their rights will be merciful, and do as little damage as possible during their attack?
Keep their fingers crossed that they won’t be sexually assaulted?
I know having a gun is not a sure way to protect yourself, but it presents a fighting chance. I think law- abiding Antiguans should be able to stand their ground and protect their lives and property. I’m not saying guardrails shouldn’t be in place, but it shouldn’t be so difficult.
If needs be, law- abiding individuals should have the legal arsenal to as Kamla Persad Bisssessar has said, “Empty the whole clip.”
Concerned

What you want gun to do in Antigua??? who you ah try shoot up??? Some of dem gun owners does rent dem gun to criminals and bandits to rob innocent people.
Forget gettin gun and go church and pray. That ah what you need, not gun
You are absolutely wrong on this one.
In England you do not hear of gun crimes.
People go out with no fear of being gunned down.
The same is true about Newzeland, Australia and Japan.
Gun ownership is more difficult than having a baby.
Hence the guns are in the hands of law enforcement personnel only.
The chances of being attacked with gun is almost zero.
In America where people claim that it is their right to own a gun people are afraid of sitting in their back yard.
Every day there are reports of gun crimes.
Every crazy man owns a gun and kills with impunity.
Is that what you want Antigua to become?
I think Antigua would be a better and safer place if only the law enforcers had guns and only when on duty.
There would be less fear amongst the citizenry.
We want to pattern after America to suit our personal causes.
Why don’t you ask for Antiguans to have it easier to open a bank account?.
Why don’t you call for better medical services like America?
The countries where American guns get into the easiest are the countries with the highest murder rates.
Check Mexico and the other Latin American countries.
Is that the Antigua you long for?
An Antigua where you are never sure if your child will return home from school.
I get the concern, but making it easier to get a gun could open the floodgates.
What we need is balance. Not a free-for-all, but not red tape either.
Straight Shooter I agree with your contribution, but right now we are not certain if a child will return from school given what is going on in this place. We need a change from the evil Cabal
not true about guns in England. we lived there for 2 years and almost every day you could pick up the newspaper and read about knifings, people hacked up and buried in the garden, sledgehammer assaults, etc. Preps will find a way without a gun if want to do harm!!
I am still not reading a practical response to a person being under threat.
I have left the plantation and so I’ve left the church which has only left black people dumb, docile, broke and broken. You religious lot are so selfish, you think going to church will cause trouble to reach every side but yours.
Tell me, I’m in my bed and like in a recent video published on this site, someone is running off and pushing in my door, WHAT SHOULD I DO????
Y’all really think the best thing is to pray?
You’re locked up inside with your family and someone is trying to get into your house, you’re gonna just wait for the police and hold tight?
Many Antiguans have reported that there are times they’ve called the police and they’ve never reached.
I should not have to live in fear and be defenseless.
And I should not have to know the Commissioner or know someone within the police force to get a gun.
As someone who is pro gun, I agree with this article to an extent. For everyone who has commented and seemingly against guns, I can guarantee you one thing. If they are in a situation and have the option of a knife, a cutlass or a gun to protect themselves and/or family, I am 100% sure they will all go for the gun first. Anyone who says otherwise are liars. We need to understand that a gun is a tool. A gun can’t fire itself. It required some form of human interaction. If someone wants to do bad/evil, they will find a way to do it, with a gun or not. What are the statistics for those countries with strong anti gun laws, for stabbings/choppings etc?
That being said, I have a few issues with persons who have licensed firearms or in the process of appying.
1- A majority of them do not visit the range to keep or hone their skills. They get their licenses and never visit the range, never service their weapons. The gun sometimes stay in their safe for years. I have seen people who eventually decide to visit the range after years and can’t hit the broad side of a barn 10 yards away. I think there should be a “recertification” of sorts, where they need to do the exam over again every 2/3 years, and if they fail, have their license revoked. OR maybe there should be some link between the ranges/clubs on island, where they have to show theyve done a certain amount of hrs a year on the range. Just a thought on those last two bits so not sure how it would work. Just a suggestion.
2. For those applying, serious thought needs to be done internally, as having a gun and having to use it lawfully are two completely different things. You have to be willing to use it if that time comes and you have to consider the effect that will have on you mentally, especially if the person trying to do harm, passes away as a result. It is not something that should be taken lightly and not one that most people think about. Taking a life is never easy but there are some situations where there are no other options.
3. Most people don’t understand and think about the responsibility and changes of owning a weapon. Your lifestyle changes, the places you go change, some of the people you hang out with may have to change, the clothes you wear might have to change, the way you approach certain situations change.
There are more but these are just a few things that come to mind at the moment. You have to really think deeply and assess things. Talk to others who are licensed owners, visit the range and talk to people there about life with owning a weapon. It is a huge responsibility so educate yourself thoroughly on the matter.
