Kelvin “Shuggy” Simon’s Hypocrisy Exposed: YASCO Bathroom Criticism Backfires Amid UPP’s Own Record of Waste
St. John’s, Antigua – In what many are calling a classic case of political hypocrisy, United Progressive Party (UPP) MP Kelvin “Shuggy” Simon launched a public tirade against the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), criticizing the state of the bathroom facilities at the YASCO Sports Complex.
However, Simon’s condemnation has quickly drawn sharp backlash, with critics pointing out that the very structure he decries was initiated under his own party’s tenure.
Simon, who now serves as a vocal opposition figure, attempted to distance himself from the genesis of the YASCO project, claiming that he was not part of the government that approved what he called an “unfinished facility.”
He further alleged that a party supporter received over $600,000 for incomplete work. Yet, what Simon failed to admit is that the YASCO facility was commissioned during the UPP’s term in office—a time marked by fiscal mismanagement and wasteful expenditures that left many national projects half-baked and under scrutiny.
Observers and constituents alike were quick to point out that Simon’s party presided over what is now seen as one of the most reckless eras of public spending in modern Antiguan political history.
From putting beads on sidewalks to lavish and questionable spending on gabion fencing, the UPP administration became synonymous with financial irresponsibility.
One of the most egregious examples includes the installation of water funnels in the contaminated Country Pond—just feet away from a major primary school—raising public health concerns while accomplishing little in the way of sustainable development.
Furthermore, the UPP’s tenure was riddled with costly acquisitions of derelict buildings, which were left to rot rather than being developed into meaningful public assets.
Many believe that if those funds had been allocated toward national sports infrastructure like YASCO, athletes today would not be training in substandard conditions.
Political commentators say Simon’s criticism rings hollow and serves as a stark reminder of why the electorate rejected the UPP in the first place.
“You cannot attempt to rewrite history simply because you weren’t in the room when the decision was made. Kelvin Simon is part of a party whose legacy on public infrastructure is both embarrassing and indefensible,” one senior political analyst remarked.
The irony is not lost on the sporting community either, which continues to call for real investment and leadership—qualities they argue are absent in Simon’s political playbook.
Rather than offering constructive solutions, his latest comments are being viewed as an attempt to score cheap political points by deflecting responsibility.
As the government pushes forward with plans to rehabilitate and modernize YASCO, the public appears increasingly wary of opposition figures who seem more interested in stirring controversy than contributing to national progress.
Kelvin Simon’s remarks, intended to shame the government, have only served to remind the nation of the UPP’s failed stewardship—an era many are eager to move beyond.

Ummm Yasco needed bathroom facilities way before UPP tenure.
Whose move is it next?
Jiggamore, you are showing your skewed view of reality. You are conveniently sidestepping the fact that the UPP wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars to erect bathroom facilities at YASCO that were NEVER completed. Now, this charlatan called Shugy is trying to behave as if it never happened and that he is now part of the very party that engaged in profligate spending.
The issue that you and the wink-up parson are ignoring is the WASTAGE of money and never accounting for it or even trying to acknowledge that it happened. Now, you and Shugy want to act brand new, as if it never happened.
Jiggamore, your blue and yellow petticoat is showing from underneath your facade of neutrality.
This writer can’t be a sane person. The ABLP has been in power for close eleven years . According to the PM ,”record economical growth”. What is there to show for this growth ? Bad roads, lack of water ,a lot of mental issues, health care at it worst ,inflation and much more. Our capital is looking like a ghetto . Looks and smells nasty . I can go on and on . UPP administration always trying to be self sufficient and try to own and not rent . Look at what is going on now . Pure nepotism . They are either balling out they comrades etc Deluxe Cinema and also Leewind Paints or renting from themselves. You write about waste, please give us the financial records on our CIP program. All our roads that were just rehabilitated is now in shambles after a few showers. Stop been a koolaid drinker and hold all accountable whether red or blue .

@ Bolans Vere
IF I WERE YOU I WOULD CONTACT WINSTON WILLIAMS YOUR PROPOSED REPRESENTATIVE FOR ST MARY’S NORTH TO GIVE ACCOUNT FOR THE FUNDSS.
THE SAME ONE WHO ABLP EMBRACE AND THE ONE THEY PREVIOUSLY SCORCHED WITH RIP-OFF.
Honestly, both parties have had their chance and failed when it comes to sports facilities.
Shuggy made noise, but where was the UPP’s action when they were in office?
Who paid for this letter to be written? Reads more like a political ad.
Jigga….don’t do it. YASCO DID NOT need bathroom facilities before UPP because bathrooms were already there. We had an entire building with bathrooms on the outside and changing rooms and a lil gym in the inside. We also had bathrooms on the western side. They were broken down when UPP took Office to out up the MUCH SMALLER building that exists now and the $600k flower pot that was to be bathrooms for spectators. So PLEASE do not make statements you don’t know about. Once a YASCO ME can talk….cause I KNOW.
WINKKUP PARSON only k bout jamming, whining, fetting, dancing, prancing and lousing.
Bolans Vere is trying to score cheap political points for the over inflated wind bag Dwane George but it will be all in vain, the next time victory will be bigger, round south people are no fools granted there are some lickspittles like you but you are the minority, the political largesse will not work with us
All I will at here is, “Lest we forget.” Any constructive to contribute, Mr. MP?
