Kelvin “Shuggy” Simon Is the Leader the UPP—and Antigua and Barbuda—Need It’s time for the United Progressive Party (UPP) to look toward the future, and that future has a name: Kelvin “Shuggy” Simon.

Simon is a trained psychologist with a strong passion for youth development.
That background matters. It means he listens, understands, and seeks to uplift others.
In a political landscape often filled with ego and personal agendas, Simon offers something different: someone who puts the country before the party.
That is the kind of leadership this nation needs to progress. Our Chairman can’t control Simon like a puppet; he is his own man.
Jamale Pringle, the current Leader of the Opposition, deserves respect for his service. He was alone in Parliament for five years and has stood up in tough times.
He connects with communities like Old Road, and he’s growing in his role.
But even among UPP members and branches, there’s an increasing sense that Pringle is not quite ready to carry the full weight of leadership on a national level—at least, not yet.
The truth being whispered in meetings and private conversations
is becoming harder to ignore: the party needs a leader who not only holds a seat in Parliament but also captures the imagination and confidence of the nation.
Shuggy Simon has that. He has international appeal, solid backing from the diaspora, and an energy that resonates beyond politics.
As for other contenders, the situation is even clearer. Harold Lovell is a stalwart, and no one can deny his contributions. But his time has come and gone.
Leadership is not about nostalgia; it’s about momentum. Richard Lewis, while visible, simply doesn’t connect with the base. Many within the party
don’t see him as the leader to take us forward. His people skills are limited, and his appeal doesn’t stretch beyond a narrow circle.
It’s not enough to have a title. Leadership is about presence, purpose, and the power to unite. Kelvin “Shuggy” Simon has those qualities in abundance.

This writer is a comedian. There’s no way a man who cannot debate a bill in Parliament is fit to Lead the UPP. Is this really the future of the UPP? I’m scared for the party if Shuggy is under consideration for Leadership.
There’s no chance in hell that a man who is consistently absent from St. Mary’s South and unable to deliver one project in his constituency seriously being considered the messiah to Unite the broken and disloyal people of his party.
Shuggy has shown zero Leadership ability and as many people stated, he just can’t use the fact that he’s “nice to look at” and he’s young as the main criteria for Leadership.
If he is a serious contender for Leadership, then The UPP has sunk to an all time low and is scraping the bottom of the barrel for the best of the sediment.
Come on people if you’re looking for a Leader why not stick with the one the members of the party duly elected and cultivate him into being the Best Leader the UPP can offer for now. Pringle has more Leadership qualities than Shuggy.
