LETTER: Is this quality of corn acceptable?

5

Dear Editor,

I am writing to bring attention to a concerning issue that I recently experienced, which I believe warrants public awareness and urgent investigation.

Perry Bay Supermarket advertised corn for sale at $11 yesterday. However, upon visiting the supermarket, I was met with nothing short of disappointment. The corn being sold was already peeled, pale in colour, and appeared to have fungus, raising serious concerns about its freshness and suitability for consumption.

It is deeply troubling that produce in such condition is being offered to consumers, particularly at discounted prices. This not only reflects poorly on food quality standards but also poses potential health risks.

One must question whether such practices contribute to the rise of chronic illnesses within our small island.Where are the health authorities in situations like this? Who is ensuring that proper food safety and quality standards are being upheld? It raises an important question: is profit being placed before public health?

it seems unfair that certain communities are being subjected to substandard goods, while sister establishments may offer more upscale products at other locations.

Consumers should not feel as though they are undeserving of quality based on where they shop. I strongly urge the relevant authorities to investigate the practices at Perry Bay Supermarket and to enforce strict quality control measures. The public deserves safe, fresh, and high-quality food.

This is not the fist time this is happening. But I choose not to stay quiet. LM

  1. Neither the quality or the PRICE are acceptable especially at that particular supermarket.

  2. You have options LM, shop somewhere else. This is not news! What’s next?

“Dear Editor, I am writing to bring attention of a loud cat in Yorks that keeps me up at night and the authorities have done nothing to address the situation”.

“This letter is to inform the editor of a plastic bottle that I found on Darkwood Beach which is completely unacceptable. I have repeatedly contacted Shugy but have not heard back from him and after three days, the bottle is still on the beach. I refuse to pick it up myself but something needs to be done ASAP”.

“I have notified the police of a loud gang of tree frogs in Fitches Creek that are ruining my quality of the life but since they are not responding, I am writing to you at ANR to inform the greater public of the inefficiency of the police on this matter and the dangers of this loud, boisterous gang of tree frogs because I am a lunatic and have nothing better to do with my time”.

    🤣

  3. Same owner , three different locations- different quality and prices. Perry bay supermarket is where the poor people shop. The quality and standards are completely different from the other two. Then there is Epicurean Fine foods and Pharmacy – much better quality than Perry bay but same type of service. Then there is Epicurean Jolly Harbour- the past few months this supermarket has shown great improvement- particularly the vegetables and fruit stands area – always well supplied and properly packed. You get a wide array of local and international varieties. The communication and willingness to assist is now superior to the other two. The clients here are from Jolly Harbour and the nearby southern villagers. When you get good service, well packed vegetable stands you don’t tend to complain about the prices.
It is also possible if not managed properly, the workers don’t put out on the shelves- first come in first go out. So perishable stay in the store longer than they should. However , I more tend to believe that the management sent the worst or rejects to sell to the poor people.

  4. You have option my dear. The price offered should have been the first red flag.

Leave it and go over to the market. The produce is fresher and CHEAPER.
