Dear Editor:

I wish to commend Calvin Ayre for being an exemplary employer.

After reading Jamilla Kirwan’s touching story about her battle with cancer, I must commend Calvin Ayre for creating a flexible work environment that allowed her to continue working at home during treatment. I think many Antiguan companies should aspire towards creating such work spaces.

In 2024, we are not living in a time where tasks are as labour intensive as they once were. Much of what we once had to do manually, has now been automated. The laptop has long been invented, making the possibility of working from home quite real.

While the Labour Minister, Sir Steadroy Benjamin has shut down talks on the 4- day work week, I think more companies should be amenable to their employees working from home.

I understand that there are some tactile jobs which require a person to physically report for work. However, there are many modern jobs that a person can do from the comfort of their home.

Illness can visit us, some of us may even have mobility issues from a broken limb and instead of just thinking of getting better, we also have to worry about how we can maintain an income because many workplaces are rigid and do not offer access for people with mobility challenges. It is a blessing to have the opportunity to maintain the dignity of working and providing for yourself and not having to worry about the stress of physically being in office.

Some employees may not have the discipline to work at home and some may thrive off the social interaction but I’m sure many would cherish not having to worry about alternative childcare if their child is ill and unable to go to school and don’t have the pain of unnecessarily commuting to and from work.

I also believe much of the toxicity of a physical workplace could be eliminated from limited interaction with peers.

Sir Calvin, thank you for creating a work environment in Antigua that is cognizant of the needs of the modern professional. With that workplace model, you will have the best of the best working for you and wanting to give their best to your company.

Cheers,

Observer.

  1. On that same note, some pregnant mothers were able to work from home as well..Kudos to Calvin Ayre and his company Cananda Place for making the working environment a safe haven for his staff.

  2. Calvin is an exemplary employer. He put his employees wellbeing equal to his own. Antiguans that are employed by him are not carriers of wood and water but have equal opportunity to sit and eat at the table.
He is not a greedy businessman but a skillful businessman, who doesn’t bad play people. As a citizen of Antigua he contributes to nation building, he asks what he can do and not what he can get. He uses his wealth to help those that are helpless, especially the sick.
Thanks on the behalf of the people of Antigua and Barbuda , especially the poor and vulnerable.

  3. I have on behalf of the silent and very grateful Antiguans and Barbudans on many time thanked this philanthropist for his generosity. While some of the nasty ones like his neighbour at Runway ten doesn’t contribute a thing to the country’s less fortunate. I’m so glad he has a foundation set up to give back to the poor and needy in the country he operates. People should note that he doesn’t make a dollar from Antiguans and Barbudans. Yes he makes his money by being registered here in Antigua and our law has protected him. But one should know America would long have tried stop him from operating. Especially his offshore gaming activity. As far as America is concern only them should be making money. Everyone else that is gaming is doing an illegal business and is accused of wire fraud. Now they are trying to get him on the bitcoin and digital currency platform. But he is now diversifying his portfolio and seem to be interest in the tourism sector. I wish him luck. And God blessing to continue his good work of giving back to the poor and needy in the society. And that he never my fall in the hands of the wicket US legal system like Stanford. Even a man that commits several murderers doesn’t get that kind of punishment. 120 years with no parole. Obviously it was not about money. It’s about taking you out. Cause bank robbers has gotten less jail time.

Asking such a dumb question here on this site, when Calvin Air Companies have a online presence, a telephone number and a physical address, tells me you must be the dumbest Certified Chartered Accountant I have ever seen. Don’t even bother applying and letting them know that you didn’t know how to get in touch with the company.

  5. Kudos to Mr. Ayre on the type of workplace that he runs and may other employers see the wisdom in being open-minded and allowing some employee flexibility particularly when the situation requires it.

  6. Bravo! I whole heartedly concur with the sentiment and the veracity of the author’s slant. Yes! Calvin is a good fit for our continuous development, and an exemplary humanitarian.
