Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my deep concern over Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s recent letter congratulating President Nicolas Maduro on his alleged victory in the national elections held on July 28, 2024.

While we, the people of Antigua and Barbuda, support the ABLP government and the positive strides it has made for our nation, it is imperative to draw a clear line when it comes to the endorsement of foreign leaders and their electoral processes.

It is well-known internationally that Venezuela does not conduct free and fair elections. The recent poll in Caracas is widely regarded as having been stolen by the Maduro dictatorship.

By extending congratulations on behalf of our entire nation, Prime Minister Browne implies that the people of Antigua and Barbuda condone the brazen theft of democratic processes and the perpetuation of authoritarian rule.

This implication is far from the truth. We, the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda, believe in democracy, fairness, and the right of every individual to have their vote counted genuinely.

The situation in Venezuela is a direct affront to these values, and as such, any congratulations extended to Maduro should reflect only the personal views of Prime Minister Browne, not those of our nation as a whole.

Furthermore, it is evident that Prime Minister Browne’s support for Maduro is not based on principle but rather on what Maduro has been able to provide our country over the years.

This pragmatic stance overlooks the immense suffering taking place in Venezuela, including mass migration and economic turmoil.

Given these dire conditions, it is inconceivable that any Venezuelan would genuinely want Maduro to remain in power.

We urge Prime Minister Browne to retract his statement or, at the very least, clarify that his congratulations to Maduro are his personal sentiments.

The people of Antigua and Barbuda do not support the blatant undermining of democracy that has taken place in Venezuela.

While we stand with our government in many respects, we must also stand firmly for our principles and the values of democracy. Let us make it clear that we do not endorse or support the Maduro regime’s actions.

Sincerely,

Strong ABLP Supporter
Antigua and Barbuda

  1. The US and their media would like to see someone in power in Venezuela who would benefit their interests. We would like the same. Venezuela has oil. Nuff said.

  2. What a message to the people?
Support a politician who openly and blatantly steals his position in power.

  3. Where is the proof? we usually run our mouth like the main stream media, the individual who said the Honourable Galston Brown congratulate Madura on his victory at the polls .did it on his behalf and not on the behalf of the Antiguan people must know that he is speaking on thee behalf of the Antiguan people,

  4. In your Election in Antigua and Barbuda last year.Gaston Browne did say,he transferred Voters from his Constituency into others to help his fellow team members. You the people did not one damn thing. So in my opinion,he believes he could do just about anything and get away with it.I hope the people do not burn down Caracas or any where else.

  5. The cohort of persons who went to Venezuela to witness whether or not the election was fair, where is their report? Let’s get the facts before pointing fingers.

  6. I fail to see the validity of this letter. ALP has been stealing or manipulation elections since VC Bird. They control the media, ABEC, plant operatives in the polling stations, have people vote twice, you name it. Maduro is a dictator, Gaston Browne is a wannabe. Not much difference really. Two peas in the same corrupt pod.
