Dear Editor:

Evangelicals and the Abortion Law

Our Evangelical Alliance (EA) seem more concerned about the abortion law than about abortion.

Our current criminal law is ineffective.  It does not protect fetal life.  It does not stop abortions.

It is inequitable, since it only affects the vulnerable – the poor and the young.

It is harmful. It forces some women to take risks to end unwanted pregnancies.

It discriminates against women even when they have been victims of violence, whether rape or incest.

It discriminates because it absolves men from any responsibility whatsoever for unwanted pregnancies.

Abortion is widespread in Antigua and the Caribbean: 65-74% of women will have at least one abortion by age 44.  Most of them will have more than one.

The law is unenforced but remains available for arbitrary abuse.

About 80% of so-called teenage pregnancies are caused by men 20 years and older.

Sexual violence is endemic.  At least 26% report experiences of forced sex, 19% have been abused by their partner and an appalling 19% report being sexually abused as a child.

We can change the law and address these facts, or we can continue to deny this reality.

The EA worries that bringing the abortion law in line with our modern Constitution and international conventions we have signed would “erode our nation’s moral code.”  Really?

In the face of these data, which probably underrepresent the true sexual horror our women and girls encounter, what is the grand moral standard the EA seeks to protect?

The Government must summon the moral courage to take actions that are decades overdue: Decriminalize abortion, foster sexual education, improve contraceptive usage and hold sexual predators accountable.

Sincerely, ASPIRE

  1. The #Evangelical_Alliance need to come out publicly against corruption, white collar criminals, street thugs/gangs, prostitution parlors, rum bars, drug dens, gun and other crimes which are plaguing the Communities.
Just don’t stand on your pulpits speaking to a handful of your indoctrinates, or pick and choose which crime is more important to address. All crimes and criminal behaviours must be addressed with the same vigor.

  2. A lot of unsubstantiated exaggerated claims being made in this letter. Pretty sure 60% of women are not having abortions. If that is not a made up number then a very poor sampling technique was used for whatever study was done. There are many unpleasant situations that can happen to women in life because of the possibility of giving birth. But, I’m sure we as a species are intelligent enough to be able to solve social problems and create a society that works for all without resorting to killing infants. Human babies are welcome no matter how they came into existence. However, there are so many other solutions to help reduce these problems that can be tried. E.g. teenagers need to be properly prepared for successful transition to adult life, careers, and interactions with the opposite gender as adults to create stable marriages and homes where children can be welcomed instead of growing up to participate in all these antagonistic interactions with the opposite gender. Why don’t the activists put more effort into that? Also, it’s a waste of time to oppose a Christian organisation on a matter such as this. Murder is always going to be regarded as the worst thing a person can do to another so the various justifications argued are meaningless. If we live in a Christian society, abortion must be illegal (except to save the mother’s life). If the percentage of atheists is much higher than in the past then there should be a referendum to determine the issue. The government should not decide on such a fundamental issue without proper approval by the people.

  3. There was a lot of rape during slavery. Most of the inhabitants of the Caribbean are descendants of rape (most people have some white slave owner DNA in them along with other DNA). If babies produced in a rape don’t deserve to live, are you saying that most people here, their friends, families and ancestors didn’t deserve to live? Rape is terrible, but the babies are innocent.

  4. There is no need for the Evangelical Alliance to reconsider its stance.
We still have a Parliament that makes the laws for the country.
Every person or group has a right to make their position known including the churches and those who have no church alliances.
It is then up to the Legislature to make the laws for or against abortion or any other issue.
