letter to the editor

Dear Government of Antigua and Barbuda,

I am writing to encourage you to enforce legislation that makes age-based discrimination illegal in Antigua and Barbuda, due to its harmful effects on individuals, businesses and the wider economy. Over the past few months, there has been a noticeable increase in advertised vacancies practicing ageism, especially against those over 35 years of age.

Outside of jobs like in the police force and the military, this nonsense needs stop. Antigua is way too small for such discrimination. It causes:

1. Loss of valuable experience: Older workers bring skills, institutional knowledge, and mentorship that are difficult to replace, yet ageism forces many out of the workforce prematurely.

2. Higher unemployment and dependency: Excluding capable workers based on age increases unemployment and places added strain on families and social support systems.

3. Negative impact on productivity: Diverse, age-inclusive workplaces are proven to be more innovative, stable, and productive.

4. Economic harm to a small island nation: Antigua cannot afford to waste human capital when its workforce is limited and every contribution matters.

5. Discrimination, unfairness and lack of human dignity: Employment decisions should be based on ability and performance, not age-based stereotypes.

6. Negative international reputation: The world is watching (especially Trump). Strong anti-discrimination laws signal that Antigua and Barbuda is progressive, fair and attractive to investors.

By supporting age-inclusive employment practices and legal protections, you can help build a stronger, fairer and more sustainable future for our tiny country.

Sincerely,

Concerned Employee
