LETTER: Disgust, disappointment, displeasure, and torn feeling about the recent murder of my colleague Margaret Harris

8
Dear Editor,
I am using this platform to express my disgust, disappointment, displeasure, and torn feeling about the recent murder of my colleague Margaret Harris “Maggie”, who worked at The Customs and Exercise Division for over 2 decades and the way the Prime Minister and The Comptroller has treated her death. I will also be mentioning deceased Mr Nigel Christian and fellow Officer Mr Cornell Benjamin.
Maggie was a quiet, pleasant and hardworking lady of our division. She interfered with no one and went about her work as best as she could. However, on Friday when the heartbroken news broke that she was murdered that was felt throughout the offices, her fellow colleagues such as myself and others felt torn, angry, confused, words can’t explain.
In reflection these few days I am ashamed, angered and disappointed that the Prime Minister Gaston Browne has not come out publicly and addressed this murder on any media or on his Radio program on Saturday. The PM has not even said what is going to be done about this murder and how will this murder be addressed and how in the future such occurrence would be prevented.
Mr PM it would if the fourth person who murder Mr Nigel Christian could be arrested and brought to Justice and arrest those who are responsible for the shooting of Mr Cornell Benjamin who up to now has not fully recovered sadly. That would bring good comfort for the minds and well-being all officers of the Customs Division.
Mr Badu needs to step and talk out publicly himself and condemn this murder of Ms Margaret Harris. He needs to call his boss the Prime Minister and ask for the perpetrators of these evil and sick acts on our three fellow and beloved officers be quickly and swiftly brought to justice. Right now, the moral am mood amongst my fellow colleagues is low right now Mr Badu and we are wondering which one of us will be next sadly. Most of us need some formal of counselling especially the officers who worked very closely with Mr Benjamin, Mr Christian and Ms Harris on a daily basis. Mr Badu also needs to ask that the investigation at Customs be expedited as quickly as possibly can be done because right now in the minds of my fellow colleagues the senseless murders seem to only happen now this investigation is ongoing.
These are sad and trying times at the Customs and Exercise Department and we want the public to understand despite all we have been through mentally these 2 years we still plow through and serve the people of Antigua and Barbuda.
R.I.P Maggie and Nigel Christian and condolences to both families. Get well soon Mr Cornell Benjamin. You all are truly missed sigh.
I hope this letter reaches positively to the hearts and minds of The Honorable Prime Minister Gaston Browne and The Comptroller of Customs Mr Raju Boddu.

  2. As I read this letter, my heart sank & tears fell from my eyes. It is extremely sad how this young lady died. Maggie is definitely a piece to the dead… She is very quiet & a person always seen by herself going & coming from her job. She certainly did not deserve to die like that.
I will concur that I also have not heard anything from the big wigs (our minister of security, the commissioner of police etc )condemning this action. Antigua is too small and too beautiful to experience theses types of inhumane actions. The appeal for police presence 24/7 is critical. Mobile units in the likes of motor bikes & motor cars can certainly compensate for the shortage of manpower…. The authorities need to increase the fleet and be alot more proactive rather than being reactive

  3. Soon from now somewhere down the line I’m going to hear that Gaston is responsible for covid 19.
Don’t you all know no other name.
Is he the only Male in Antigua.
Its tiring now .gaston Gaston Gaston.
    Give me a break.

    • Because he is a disgraceful human being. When you have an non empathetic leaders the people follow; he must learn to lead by example and right now he’s a poor example of a leader and man period.

  4. These are very bad times for our Government officials, and offercers. The big dogs are caught and are taking care of the people who caught them. There will never be justice for Nigel and Maggie. To high up it goes. NIGEL was a great friend of mine. He will never get justice because of what he knew. I did not know this young CUSTOSM officer, but she was protecting Antigua and Barbuda just the same. People in high government are responsible, let the dead rest in peace, and the responsibe ones rot in h. L

    • a de big dawgs dem people dem handle de dawg dem business most likely, a suh de ting set up seen. wat is to be must be, granted, an it nah done yet till the fat lady sing. De elders dem of long long time always seh “MONKEY KNOW WHICH LIMB FE JUMP PUN” one day or night dem same dawg dem people might mess with the wrong human being…..

  5. This scare the hell out of me, if they are willing to kill such a quiet person then everybody else life is at risk. There are alot of murderers walking among us and most people don’t care a damn until something happens to one of their relatives. There are too many unsolved murders on this small Island.
