LETTER: Did ABS TV Really Send 50 Years of Its Records to Cooks Dump?

0

Over the last 60 years, Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting Station has covered thousands of events, hundreds of historic happenings. The lack of proper management in the local station, as ABS staff claims, has ensured that these were not backed up, were not digitized. So we couldn’t go to ABS and ask for footage all the big events and incidents from 1990. But last year it seemed like all of that was about to change.

Management got equipment for digitizing and made a big show of it by advertizing the re-airing of old episodes of certain shows, re-airing some events. And man, I got so excited. I was looking forward to the digitizing of 50 years worth of Antiguan and Barbudan history. I got excited about the prospective of regular, local, throwback Thursdays as the young people would say. But all of that was short-lived, according to ABS staff.

The Staff says the digitization process was stopped quietly and that now approximately 75% of those undigitized tapes have been sent to Cooks where they have been buried. At least this is the information circulating. And I don’t want to believe it.

I do not want to believe that anyone affiliated with the organization’s managerial ongoings has instructed or allowed the destruction of the country’s history. And so I’m asking, I am imploring the General Manager, the Minister of Information, or even the Prime Minister, because this is of national importance, to come to the people of Antigua and Barbuda and either clear our minds or tell us how this treacherous act will be punished.
