LETTER: Demanding Clarity on UPP’s Stance on Freedom of Speech Amidst Billboard Controversy

9
Joseph billboard being destroyed by DCA

Dear Editor,

“When the DCA decided to remove that canvas from our billboard, we didn’t raise a voice of protest as a party, because our party is not responsible and our party would be concerned if any of these canvasses were to have defamatory language,” he said.

These are the words of the UPP legal advisor Leon Chaku Symister. But this is a lie. Not only did members of the UPP party “raise a voice of protest”, they were absolutely adamant that the removal of the suddenly-mysterious billboard covers was a violation of free speech and called for public outrage:

According to a report, from Antigua Newsroom, on a Snakepit Interview with Kelvin “Shugy” Simon on March 24th regarding the removal of the billboard covers, “Simon asserted, “I’m going to take DCA to court for trespassing and removing property from a property they have no right to remove.””

Further, “Simon reaffirmed [sic] his commitment to challenging what he perceives as injustices and ensuring that freedom of speech is upheld in Antigua and Barbuda.”

In what seems to be a complete about-face, Mr. Symister goes on to say “Whoever the campaigners are, they seemed to target UPP billboards, but this is not a task being carried out by the United Progressive Party…”

The word “target” implies you are a victim here. You mean to say that after defending the right for freedom of speech from this “campaigner”, you now claim you have no idea who it was? Compliance is as bad as the offence.

So, which is it? Are you still defending the mysterious billboard covers for freedom of speech, even though the content was indeed damaging to several parties?

Are you still insisting that people be allowed to say what they feel, displaying destructive inferences, despite no evidence to support the same?

Are you still encouraging the court of public opinion to rule guilty, even though there isn’t even a criminal investigation?

Or are you suddenly realizing the dangers that lie ahead with this course of action and washing your hands clean of any prior association?

If you had nothing to do with those billboard covers, why did you not report it to the police for vandalism?

If you had nothing to do with those billboard covers, then who did? Who the cap fit, let them wear it. But when the truth finally comes out, know that the blame will not rest solely on one man’s shoulder.

Sincerely,
Fed Up.

  1. Everyone knows except those foolish UPP supporters that this billboard with the CEO from GLOBAL was orchestrated by UPP. Is like UPP has copied the AlP playback in thinking people foolish.

    • And here is a deferential Kowtowing ABLP supporter defending the indefensible once again, and allowing Maria Browne to use the DCA as some sort of political outpost to circumvent the legal aspects of the dismantling of billboards and posters for the government’s obvious advantage.

She is wrong (and she knows it), and also note her proper lack of due process, which reaks of calling in many favours; and let Antiguans not forget that by involving our police in this matter, doesn’t allow for anyone – especially the opposition party – to contest this blatant intrusion on someone’s private property.

EVERYONE RECOGNISES THIS EXCEPT “THOSE FOOLISH ABLP SUPPORTERS”.

Tek dat @ . for brains – over to you now.

Come on! Brixtonian is ready to take you down on your reply; a sentence, or even a misplaced WORD!!!

  2. The covers quoted the prime minister and referenced a public court case?

How is that “damaging to several parties”?

    • Because the implication was that the man is a crook and is being protected by the government. Think for one moment, if you can, that it isn’t true. It damages him, for no reason, the Bank and its other depositors, the supervisory authority and the government. In the bigger picture, foreign investors will not want to invest in the country, and that’s not good for us. There is a huge trickle down effect.

      • If the government didn’t resort to perceived underhand ‘cloak and dagger’ tactics, and was more transparent in their dealings with the public at large, then the “trickle down effect” you speak of from potential investors wouldn’t be an issue at all @ The Bigger Picture.

        Just saying …
Sadly, where we are today, lays squarely on the shoulders of the ABLP, and all they had to do over the last term of office was to be frank and open with the electorate.

  3. They would love for the loudest cry to be for the billboard removal but let’s not forget:

    – WIOC sold land to the son of one of it’s board members and the PM
    – DCA renting building from the PM’s son and hunting billboards
    – The Global Bank debacle.
    – (bonus) Wireless road in a horrible state

  4. This letter is merely a distraction. The DCA is no more than a puppet of the ABLP.
Anyone with the slightest bit of sense must acknowledge that the destruction of these billboards is a self serving action of the ABLP who dictates the actions of the DCA.

  5. Whatever you say Gaston. SMH

How about you stop wasting writing editorials and fix the damn country.

You are sick. You and your family getting creatively rich while taxing the people out of existence. Just sick!

I look forward to hearing the answers to the Freedom of Information Act request about your son’s rental by the government in the next 18 days. Go study that.

  6. Dear Bill Board Bandit, please Plaster more posters. Post them alll over Antigua and Barbuda use ablp bill board if you have too.
