Dear Editor,
I am using this medium to express my disappointment, my displeasure and my disgust of a deficiency that I deemed worth looking at within the operations of the Transport Board in collaboration with the Police.
Recently, I purchased a used vehicle from a friend. As a young man & more so, as a law abiding citizen, I am very much aware that vehicles should not be driven on the road unless the said vehicle is insured and has a license with a number plate affixed to it.
As a result, I proceeded to enquire as to what I can do to make my newly bought vehicle road worthy, so that it can be driven without any number plates from where I live to the Transport Board Dept, so that the vehicle can be registered and become in compliant with the law.
Surprisingly, I was informed that neither the police establishment or the Transport Board Dept offer such services…. In fact, it was mentioned that I would have to take the chance and hope and perhaps pray that I do not get caught by the police….
Hearing such an answer left me baffled and caused me to raise my eye brows…..
In a beautiful country like ours where we are working assiduously to become an economic powerhouse, why are the simple services of issuing road passes for unlicensed vehicles, overlooked?
Does this mean that a driver or a vehicle owner who purchases a vehicle should become vulnerable to the law?
What if there was a road check or police patrolling and the person was caught driving the vehicle without any number plates on their way to Transport Board?
What if a police does not use discretion at the time of his or her investigation
What if a road pass was issued for the said driver, would it not reduce or eliminate police harassment on the road?
What if a road pass was issued from either the Police or Transport Board perhaps at a small fee, would it not be possible for more monies be generated for the treasury?
I am appealing to the authorities that a service of offering road passes for unlicensed vehicles should be considered. It will not only benefit the driver or the owner, but it can sure benefit the country on a whole.
Steve

So true!! The authorities need to get their act together
Just get yourself 5+ vehicles, and ask them to come out to you. When they do, give them $100, and everything will be passed within 5 minutes.
I would jus ask to be escorted to TB..I am pretty sure Mcbernie would jus say make sure when I see u again this vehicle is road legal and send u on ur way…But yes the author has a very valid point…
They should be able to give you a 24hr temporary road pass for this purpose. I fact you would have already have a plate number and insurance before you go TB. Simple things gets so complicated in Antigua. Citizens who want to do right always find difficulties. The author is 100% right on this one. Absolute nonsense
They shouldn’t be a problem as long you have valid insurance and you are going straight to the transport board cauae I’ve don’t This in many occasions, and also stop by police and I present my insurance certificate and let them know that I’m going to the transport board to license the vehicle and get the number plate and all they said was proceed,,
The safest way would be to first insure the vehicle then have it transported to the inspection center for registration. Or have your friend drive the car to the inspection center BEFORE you purchased it, you would then do all the necessary paperwork.
