LETTER: Debunking Prime Minister Gaston Browne LIES on Oil & Fuel Costs

6
PM at V.C Bird Day celebrations

Dear Editor,

Does the Prime Minister have a bad memory? Is he intentionally trying to mislead the people?

The reason I am asking these questions is because of the recent statement the PM made on gas prices in this country. Let me elaborate.

The price for fuel never went down for YEARS when the price for a barrel of oil was low globally. They also did not go down below $12.50 even when other territories were paying EC$9.00 and less. Imagine we transport fuel to other islands and those islands sell it for less. For example, let’s look at Dominica. We ship fuel to Dominica from here and today the price for a gallon of gas is $9.39 from my own personal Google search.

Logically one would think because the fuel is being shipped from here, that their fuel price down there would be much more than ours. Also considering shipping cost associated with transferring the fuel to Dominica, one would expect it to be considerably higher than ours.

The people need to understand that prices never go down here on anything. Once the price goes up, the supplier could be giving new shipment of a crude barrel of oil for free, the distributers here would never drop the price (WIOC). It is absolutely highway robbery all across the board. I wonder if the rumor I heard about Propane Gas going up for consumers is really true?

The Prime Minister must STOP deceiving the people of this country, gives the people the impression he is doing the world of good and truly cares about the people.

This needs to STOP! If you want to show you truly care about the less fortunate and middle class, start with reducing the price of fuel at the pump, and then you can talk about oil and fuel prices. We all know this will never be done.

The people of this country need to do their research and stop listening and believing politicians from both sides and do their own research.

  1. Writer, for the past atleast 7 years, A&B prices have been inline with others in the OECS region. If you were to expand it out to the non oil producing CARICOM countries you would see places like Barbados (at all times), Jamaica at times with higher prices than A&B. The PM when in opposition advocated a stable gas price policy. He felt price stabillity would eliminintate shocks hence help persons to plan better. That policy continues today. If you would take the time to look at a monthly chart, expanding 5 years, you would see in 2018, 2019 oil prices were as high as now, yet goverment did not increse the cost of fuel at the pump. Covid, in 2020, sunk oil prices due to reduced demand, you woud know the government hardly received any fuel taxes.

    • Eliminate sock my ass. The Man gave us numbers why don’t you do the same? Is Gass in Dominica that much cheaper. Most countries gas prices fluctuate based on supply. If the never go down during years it should, then over the long haul the people pay a hefty price accumulated. If you want to know how to help people ASK THEM. Whose fault if the price is high and the government according to you hardly receive fuel taxes?…GREAT all the more reason to reduce the price and find out where all of the supposed tax money went or is going.. Covid did not affect gas prices because it IS, WAS and for a long time much too high so where is the SURPLUS in escrow? The real story is the fact that high Gas prices means INFLATION and High food and essentials prices. So In MY opinion is controllable but you are saying this ridiculous policy is on purpose. Fuel price control will lower the COST OF LIVING and help with economic recovery. Government is to make people lives better that’s it’s only mission or goal.

      • George dominica pricing has always been a outlier in the region. You seem unware their minimum wage is some 4.00 vs 8.20 in ANU. Their people tend to migrate to places like ANU to find a better standard of living. Again A&B pricing has been on par with the OECS regional averages. Interestly many times Grenada pricing is even higher than A&B.
On another note I see the store near Harney has now moved to selling clothes, wish you much sucess

    • @Tenmen you are a dam liar, simple as that get the hell out of the top dog body latrine. The price at the pump is $12:50 per gallon and that price is when a barrel of oil was $120, a barrel oil as of today is now $78 all what is happening now the rapers are getting less. You sick puppies always trying to mislead the public. This administration is raping the consumers to continue their self enrichment program. I saw you the other day outside of ECAB and I said to myself just look at that fool his mother must be so disappointed. I hope you get a good paying job from the top dog so you can carry yourself better in public.

      • Boss seems you forget when in June 2011, it ( Crude Oil (petroleum) was 105.85 per barrel, the price here was 15.80EC per imperial gallon (see Gas prices dip slightly in Antigua, hehabarinetwork.com/, June 16, 2011 ), this you may remember happened under the UPP admin. Under the current admin, the price was reduced downwards atleast twice
